Ilke Wyludda’s story is unique.

Born in 1969, she was one of the final products of the former East German setup, achieving world U20 records in both the discus throw and shot put.

In 1989, she launched the discus to an extraordinary 74.56m in Neubrandenburg, a mark that remains as the world U20 record and equal second on the world all-time list to this day. During this period, she racked up a staggering 41 consecutive wins.

Her success continued into the post-reunification era, achieving two silver medals at the World Championships and a European title in 1994. However, her greatest achievement came at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, where she dominated the field by over 3 metres—with five of her legal throws being enough to win.

She underwent fifteen surgeries during her career for various injuries before retiring in 2000, with many thinking it would be the last time we’d see her in the discus ring.

That was until 2010, when she faced a life-changing bout of sepsis caused by a bacterial bone infection. After battling four bouts of blood poisoning, amputation to her right leg was required to keep her alive. “I had a choice between losing my leg or losing my life, so I chose to live,” she said in an interview. 🎤

Wyludda then took the opportunity to make a comeback, this time in para events. She qualified for the women’s F57/58 discus throw and shot put at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, becoming the first German athlete to compete in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. She then went on to win medals at the European and world level before retiring for good in 2017.

Ilke Wyludda tragically passed away on 1 December 2024 at 55 years old following a short illness.

If you are a native to Maryland high school track and field, you have seen Nick Agoris at a meet. This man did so much for my track and field journey as a young man in high school and also shaped me outside of track as well. We have lost an absolute legend in the throws community that promoted the sport and touched so many lives in a positive way in the state of Maryland and beyond. RIP Coach Agoris ❤️
