May is National Water Safety Month 💙
As a swim instructor, this one hits close to home. Water is meant to be enjoyed, but it demands respect.
The truth is, drowning is quick and silent. But the good news? It’s also preventable.
Here’s what every family should know:
✔️ Assign a Water Watcher (undistracted, eyes-on supervision)
✔️ Layers of protection: fences, alarms, learn to swim, and learn CPR
✔️ Swim lessons must include real water safety skills—including floating
Around here, we believe in skills before thrills—because confidence in the water starts with safety.
Whether it’s the pool, ocean, or bathtub… every moment matters.
Let’s make this a safe summer for our kids 🙌

Throwback to May 2024 🌞

This little guy was all about showing off his skills… and his silly side too. 👅💦

ISR isn’t just about survival skills—it’s about building confidence, joy, and trust in the water. Watching kiddos go from cautious to confident (with a tongue out at the camera, of course!) is the best part of what I do. 💙

Most parents are surprised to learn this 👇

Drowning doesn’t usually happen in swimsuits.
It happens when kids slip into the water fully clothed.
That’s why ISR lessons prepare children for real-life situations—like falling in unexpectedly. This sweet kiddo is practicing fully clothed, building the skills and confidence they need if the unthinkable ever happens. 🌊💙

➡️ Did you know?
Children are 70% more likely to drown when they fall in wearing clothes compared to swimsuits.
Skills before thrills. Safety first, always. 🐠

“Will my child really learn to swim?”

It’s one of the most common questions I hear—and the answer might surprise you.

YES, your child can learn to swim—in weeks, not months. But it’s not about pushing them—it’s about meeting them where they are developmentally.

Comment “SWIM” to get the direct link to register! 💧

At ISR Monterey Bay, we don’t rely on floaties or games to hope your child figures it out someday. Our individualized lessons are designed to teach real swimming and survival skills based on your child’s readiness and abilities, not just their age.

ISR lessons work because we focus on skills before thrills—building water confidence through proven methods that prioritize your child’s safety and progress.

Four years ago!!!

Just a mama watching her babies swim with complete confidence. My youngest was four, my oldest five. This moment still gives me chills.

This is my why!!

I became a certified ISR Instructor because I wanted my kids to be safe and confident in the water. I had no idea that small step would turn into such a big ripple.

Since then, I’ve had the honor of teaching over 500 children to be safer, stronger swimmers. What started as a passion for my own family has grown into a mission—for every family.

I’ll never forget where it started. And I’ll never stop sharing the gift of survival swimming.

Happy Easter! During this holiday weekend, please remember that drowning can happen anytime! Layers of protection are so important. If you are going somewhere new or where you haven’t been in a while, examine your surroundings! It only takes 2 inches of water and 20 seconds for a child to drown!

- Empty buckets, kiddie pools and splash tables!
- Be sure to lock pool gates and doors, remove large pool toys that could trap your children underneath and toys that may lure your child to the pool!
- Designate a pool watcher if you will be in the water!
- Always check the water FIRST if your little one goes missing!

What is your child learning during swim lessons?

Feeling frustrated after my daughter’s swim lessons. Despite weeks of classes, she hasn’t made much progress because they relied so heavily on flotation devices during the lessons. Devices like these have became a crutch rather than a teaching tool.

She never got the chance to learn the proper body positioning or build confidence in the water without the floaties. Then I found ISR!!! Within a matter of weeks my daughter was INDEPENDENTLY FLOATING and SWIMMING across an Olympic size pool.

If you’re considering swim lessons for your child, I highly recommend asking how much time is spent actually practicing swimming skills without flotation aids. Every child deserves the chance to truly learn and feel confident in the water!

💧 I Didn’t Know… But Now I Do. 💧

There was a time when I, too, used puddle jumpers on my kids. (These are my kids in the reel). I didn’t know the risks. I didn’t know they teach children a vertical position in the water—known as the drowning position.

I didn’t know they give kids a false sense of security and confidence.

I didn’t know many drownings happen after the puddle jumper comes off because kids don’t understand the difference between wearing one and not wearing one.

But now I know.

And if you didn’t know either, that’s okay—you’re here now, and knowledge is power.

🚫 Puddle jumpers and floaties do not teach children to swim. They’re not designed for survival skills—they’re designed for convenience.

✅ Real water safety comes from independent swimming skills—skills taught through ISR lessons.

I’m not here to shame or judge. I’m here to educate—parents, grandparents, babysitters, and anyone who cares for children around water.

When we know better, we can do better.

Let’s give our kids the gift of real water safety and life-saving skills. 🛡️💙

PROTECT THE LITTLES

Having all layers of protection in place makes it harder for littles to get to the water, and gives them a fighting chance if something were to happen.

Ideally, all layers will be in place around water, but sometimes there may only be a few available where you are. There is only ONE layer of protection your child will ALWAYS have with them- which do you think it is?

HEAR ME OUT: Puddle Jumpers, life vests, Otteroos, Little floats that strap babies in - they are all putting your child in the vertical position!

What’s wrong with the vertical position?

Children rely on muscle memory as they are developing, and if they were to ever be in the water without one of these devices, their muscle memory would kick in and they would likely get into the vertical position. THIS IS KNOWN AS THE DROWNING POSITION.

Survival swim lessons will teach your child to float on their backs (where they are able to breath). And we will practice it over and over and over again. If your child falls into the water, once again that muscle memory kicks in and they float on their backs safely.

Any kind of flotation device will also give your child a false sense of security. MANY MANY drownings happen after a day of swimming. The puddle jumper gets taken off, and as kids are eating snack or drying off, what happens? They slip back in the pool for “one more minute!” They think they can do it, and the reality can be deadly.

And you may be thinking to yourself, “This isn’t us. This cannot happen to us. We watch our children. My child knows the difference between having his puddle jumper on, and when he doesn’t.”

Ditch the flotation devices. Get in the pool with your kids. Find a survival swim program to enroll them in.

All smiles (and clapping 👏) for this 15 month old🥰

DROWNING IS PREVENTABLE!

Children can learn to swim starting at 6 months old! Infant Swimming Resource’s Self-Rescue program teaches children how to survive if they were to reach the water alone. ISR lessons are one-on-one and customized to the developmental level of each child.
