Schmersal collaborated w/ drummer Christian Eric Beaulieu (Triclops!, Anywhere, Peace Creeps) to form Vertical Scratchers. The band released the album Daughter of Everything on Merge in 2014 which featured guest appearances by Jonathan Hischke (Flying Luttenbachers, Hella, Broken Bells) & fellow Daytonite Robert Pollard (GBV). Pitchfork gave the album a 7.2 rating, calling the music “rock‘n’roll rendered on Etch A Sketch...occasionally, you find yourself marveling at an accidental masterpiece.”

Scratchers also contributed an exclusive track, “Jackie’s Favorite,” to the Merge 7-inch box set Or Thousands Of Prizes.

I used to work at summer camps for mentally handicapped kids and this song was by far the most popular camp song. We thought by slowing it down it would bring out the very sober, depressing theme of the lyrics. A lot of those old folk songs are like that. We just messed with it in the studio and Kramer went nuts and insisted we do it for the record.
