Last days to see my big flowers sharing the room with April Street’s large watercolor seasons at James Fuentes 5015 Melrose Ave
Closing Saturday 9/27 from 3-7
April and I in conversation with Yann at 4pm
What will we talk about??
For me, it all started with this image of the nightblooming cereus that grows on the lava rock wall at Punahou school in Honolulu, found as a hand-tinted photo postcard from the 1920s. I made the painting pretty much the same way the reference image would have come into being during manufacture - at first painting only with ivory black on natural color canvas til the b+w image emerged, and then having one radically nonchalant afternoon washing in some imprecise yellow green and pink stains at the end. It was so fun to make a painting that way, I flipped the image horizontally and did it again. The rest of the works on view at the gallery came after. I kept blowing up images of different flowers to this much larger than human scale to see what unanticipated effects of that scale shift might emerge, especially when they start to feel like textiles or wallpaper, something more graphic than I am used to. Nightblooming Cereus is also my FAVORITE plant. So theatrical. taken in Melrose Avenue, L.A. CA by @beccaevamann

A giant rose at night from my show with April Street at James Fuentes, on view til September 13th.
This is one of those special English roses that smells like lemons. The variety is called Gertrude Jekyll, named after the famous arts and crafts era garden designer and horticulturalist, who started out as a painter actually. (for a good time read the crazy story of her “garden of Eden” on giudecca island in Venice)
This one grew in the garden of my old house in (the other)Venice, but it smelled so good I took a cutting when I moved and gave it hormones and misted it carefully until it grew new roots so I could plant it again in the new dirt. by @beccaevamann

My painting of a Yucca flower was mostly about the optical assault of the saturated blue sky that’s both flat and deep we get in CA sometimes. I wanted to paint that blue. The image came from a Medicinal Plants of the West book JPW3 left in my studio years ago, which explained to me the very great many uses of this ubiquitous and iconic plant of the west - edible flowers and hearts, strong fibers for sewing, sandals and cordage, and soap! Their hearts are fire resistant, and will quickly sprout again though the rest of the plant has completely burned. And you can make wine out of them. They say when you see the flower stalks you know the storms are over.
On view at James Fuentes in LA, alongside 4 other oversize flowers by moi, and April Street’s large scale watercolor triptychs series having to with the passing and marking of time which has its whole own logic and lexicon, up til Sept 13th go see em!

Soccer Club Club returns to Barely Fair with:
In THIS Economy?!?
featuring works by Ficus Interfaith, Becca Mann, and Summer Mann
On View April 23rd through May 11th, 2025

A dream riff on Ancient Roman interiors, replete with Palladiana style floor reinterpreted by Ficus Interfaith to include popcorn kernels among the marble chips. Handpainted silk wallcoverings by Becca Mann combine trompe-l’œil and architectonic motifs with pictorial escape hatches. The room is furnished with a lone dining chair assembled impromptu by Summer Mann from the cage of a champagne cork and the lens of an antique watch. Readymade plastic apparitions inhabit the space unsettlingly, à la Soccer Club Club.

Special Evening Events: April 23, 24, & 26
General Admission: April 23-27, 11-4 PM
NOTE: tickets cannot be purchased at the fair but are available in advance at www.barelyfair.com by @beccaevamann
