What a day painting @theedinburghbookshop , the booksellers are always so friendly and helpful. Thank you Stephanie, Fiona and Ivana for looking after me 🥰 What a super cool cover by @becikelly ! I had so much fun painting this wild lion for Kate Atkinson’s new novel - Our Noble Selves for its publication tomorrow (10th Sept) by @doubledayukbooks . They even have special indie editions with a luminous blue lion on the cover 🦁

It might look like I've had my own merch made (a girl can dream!), but my husband gave me this ring years before the amazing @la_boca_& @becikelly designed the cover for The Carrier. I'm taking it as a good omen, and have been wearing it as my lucky charm ever since. 👁️

The Carrier is being released in less than three weeks now, and you can pre-order your copy today...link in bio x

The Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize Shortlist 2026

Now in its fifth year, the Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize is a celebration of emerging talent in fiction of all forms, set up to champion new voices and voted for by Waterstones booksellers.

Our shortlist is officially announced below.

Lost Lambs by @madelinecash

A devastatingly funny takedown of the modern American family, Cash’s bravura debut focuses on the dysfunctional Flynns and the nefarious billionaire whose exploits might just bring them all back together again.

May We feed the King by @poorsasquatch

A startlingly original, intricate adventure in history, imagination and the human psyche, May We Feed the King finds the curator of a royal medieval palace drawn deeper and deeper into the life of its one-time occupants – a reluctant ruler and his courtiers scheming to replace him.

Honey in the Wound by @han_g0_

With echoes of One Hundred Years of Solitude, Jiyoung Han’s spellbinding inter-generational epic spans ninety years of Asian history with visceral power and breathtaking magical realism.

Under Water by @taramenon

Haunting and elegiac, Menon’s debut novel is a nuanced study in grief and ecological change, tracing the close friendship of two girls on a small Thai island and the emotional aftermath of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami.

A Private Man by @c_est_qui77

Sensual, compelling and exquisitely written, A Private Man follows the forbidden relationship between two individuals battling with their conceptions of faith and sacrifice at a Catholic college in a quiet village.

The Infamous Gilberts by Angela Tomaski

Exquisitely gothic and darkly comedic, Tomaski’s singular debut traces the lives of the five fatherless Gilbert children through the turbulent twentieth century.
