New Zealand’s iconic riverside lodge.

If you want the classic New Zealand luxury lodge experience, Huka Lodge is the one I would have at the top of the list.

Set beside the emerald-blue Waikato River in Taupō and holding two MICHELIN Keys, it feels special from the moment you arrive. The suites open out to the gardens and the river, and after its recent transformation there is a beautiful new wellness area and spa to come back to.

What I love about Huka Lodge is how much there is to enjoy beyond your suite.

Walk straight from the lodge along the river to Huka Falls, or try fly fishing from the riverbank with a guide. Lift off the lodge lawn by helicopter for a private picnic in the Kaimanawa Ranges, or spend a day out on Lake Taupō, past the Māori rock carvings.

And then there are the evenings.

Drinks and canapés before dinner, then a private dinner for two in one of the lodge’s dining spaces around the property, with the river beside you.

This is the kind of stay I love weaving into a New Zealand itinerary, alongside the places and experiences that matter most to the two of you, so every part of the journey feels like it belongs together.

For couples who want iconic luxury, beautiful food and a peaceful setting with views out over the lawn to the river, this is one I would absolutely recommend.

Save this as a lodge worth building your North Island journey around.

I’m Chris, a New Zealand-based luxury travel advisor and owner of Binge on Travel, creating personalised New Zealand journeys designed for you.

This island is named for kangaroos, and they have never let anyone forget it.

Kangaroo Island, South Australia. On World Kangaroo Day, a special nod to the endemic Kangaroo Island kangaroo - darker, stockier and shorter-furred than its mainland cousin, found nowhere else on earth.

A ribbon of red dirt leads you to @longitude131, with its safari-style tents scattered across the rusty dunes. Unparalleled views of Uluṟu’s changing colours. World Heritage-listed desert wilderness. Ancient heritage and culture. Take in the stillness and beauty of Australia’s vast Red Centre.

Low cloud hangs over the peaks.

Rain reaches across the lagoon.

Kentia palms sway in the southerly.

On some afternoons the weather is the theatre of the place. Choose an outdoor armchair or lounger on Gower’s Terrace and take it all in.

A stay at @southernoceanlodge invites you to dine with a daily-changing menu crafted from fresh, local Kangaroo Island produce.

Kingfish served with apple dongchimi and grape. Kangaroo with jerusalem artichoke and saltbush pommes anna. The guest favourite, marron with watermelon and bay leaf, sustainably farmed by stonemason Scott Wilson, the man behind the limestone wall in the lodge’s Great Room.

Executive Chef Gianni Hendrickx works hand-in-hand with the island’s producers, and the walk-in, help-yourself cellar welcomes you discover the finest South Australian wines.

At Longitude 131°, the desert shapes the way each day begins and unfolds. Mornings are quiet and cool, a pause of anticipation before the day starts to warm; the afternoons are still as the heat shimmers above the desert floor; the evenings are long with stars and planets appearing one by one in the open, dusk-cool sky.

A seal spotted sunbaking on a warm rock.

A black bear foraging on the banks of the estuary at low tide.

Otters, always in company.

A marmot watching from the slopes above.

Just some of the wild neighbours you may encounter in the untouched reaches of Clayoquot Sound.

This is what days are made of. 🌿❤️

Being a dad on Lord Howe Island is pretty special. Bush walks with the family, fresh air, incredible views and little adventures together, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Birdie made it all the way up to Smoking Tree Ridge (although I may have had to carry her back down on my shoulders 😂). Little Rudy did pretty well too, all bundled up on my front in his carrier.

It’s pretty amazing what makes all of this possible. Choosing a career as a chef, having a beautiful wife by my side, and being fortunate enough to have an epic Head Chef role at Capella Lodge. I feel incredibly lucky to have a career I love while getting to raise a family and make memories in such a special place.

These are the days I’ll always be grateful for. ❤️🌴

Welcome to @appellationrestaurant at @thelouisebarossa.

Start with fresh tuna with daikon, fermented chilli and buttermilk. Continue to cured kingfish with yuzu, apple and cucumber. Later, pear sponge with strawberry sorbet and coulis, with just a hint of local Barossa shiraz.

Executive Chef Sam Cooper and his team work closely with Barossa growers, producers and winemakers to craft a menu that speaks to the season and the valley itself.

Welcome to Country: a luxury travel guide to Indigenous Australia.

I grew up in Australia, and it took me decades to understand what the land beneath me held. This country is home to the oldest living cultures on earth, with more than 65,000 years of connection to Country.

Indigenous heritage is not an add-on to a luxury Australia itinerary. It is the lens for understanding the whole journey, from Uluṟu (@exploreuluru) and Longitude 131° (@longitude131) to The Ghan, the Kimberley, the Daintree and Saffire Freycinet in Tasmania.

Read my full guide through the link in my bio, or send me a message to start planning your Australia journey.
