On the longest day of the year, more than 1,000 community members gathered along the Los Angeles River (Paayme Paxaayt) to celebrate art, nature, music, and community.

Together, we experienced:
🎶 Live performances by Mary Lattimore, San Cha, and CALYCOSA
🎭 Bob Baker Marionette Theater
🎨 The Artist Pavilion Exhibition
🚩 River Assembly, featuring 22 artist-designed flags
🦅 Guided walks with the LA Birding Club and Herb Club
🎨 Kids’ Art Activity
🌮 Delicious offerings from our local food and beverage vendors
🎤 Sound by Living Earth

To our artists, performers, curators, volunteers, park staff, local vendors, community partners, sponsors, and the entire LA River Arts team—thank you for helping bring this vision to life.

We are especially grateful to the National Endowment for the Arts and the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs for supporting free, accessible arts programming along the river.

This was only the beginning. Thank you for helping us launch River Solstice—we can’t wait to welcome you back next year.

📸 Swipe through a few of our favorite moments, and tag yourself, your friends, and your favorite memories from the day!

Last Sunday, I led production for @lariverarts’ inaugural River Solstice Festival, a free festival celebrating the longest day of the year along the LA River.

After 3 months of artist & vendor coordination, programming, permit logistics (chile 😅), site visits, and more spreadsheets than I can count, we finally got to see it all come to life.

I love festival production because it’s equal parts logistics, problem-solving, and care. Bringing those skills to a festival here in LA—and alongside so much of my own community—made this one especially meaningful.

Proud to continue building this work through @noirstudios.xyz 🤎

Thank you to @noonprojects for being my partner in ideation, to @livingearth.la for saying my name in the room before I even entered it, and to @neaarts and @culture_la for helping make this work possible.

Endless gratitude to our artists, performers, volunteers, day-of staff, vendors, community partners, and everyone who came out to celebrate the river with us.

Here’s to year 1. See y’all next year 🫂🌿

Recapping our summer programs under 𝓛𝓲𝓰𝓱𝓽 𝓖𝓪𝓾𝓰𝓮 by Departamento del Distrito @deldistrito--thank you to all who gathered with us in the checkered shade, cooled by a clean energy-powered breeze 🍃

1-2: During our first program of the summer, a roundtable discussion titled Cultures of Resource Sovereignty, we basked in a mingling of resource-centered practices shared by Asuka Hisa (ICA LA) @asukahisa @theicala, Ale Lemus (Crenshaw Dairy Mart) @ale.porvida @crenshawdairymart, Debra Scacco @debrascaccostudio, Departamento del Distrito @deldistrito, and Solarpunks @solarpunks.club ⚡️ We modeled material exchanges and had our first potluck picnic of the season ⛱️ Photos by Adriana Hamui @adriana.hamui

2-3: Artist and early childhood educator Jacqueline Falcone @carb_party @bedandbreakfast_la led a kids-friendly solar oven workshop, guiding participants in producing DIY cookers that harness solar light and amplify energy. S’mores were on the menu 🌞 🍫 !

4-5: Emily Russell of Function Design @functiondesigned and Caco Peguero of United Futures @unitedfutures provided a hands-on evening workshop of floral architectures 🌺, staged shadows, and scenic designs that transformed as the sun set. We shared hibiscus drinks and a final potluck as 𝓛𝓲𝓰𝓱𝓽 𝓖𝓪𝓾𝓰𝓮 powered a colorful evening display.

If you haven't visited 𝓛𝓲𝓰𝓱𝓽 𝓖𝓪𝓾𝓰𝓮 yet, you still have time! 𝓛𝓲𝓰𝓱𝓽 𝓖𝓪𝓾𝓰𝓮 may be experienced in the M&A x Craft Contemporary Courtyard during the museum's open hours. 𝓛𝓲𝓰𝓱𝓽 𝓖𝓪𝓾𝓰𝓮 Workshop: Cook with the Sun 🌞🍫❤️‍🔥

Join us for a lunchtime workshop on solar cooking! Led by Jacqueline Falcone @carb_party @bedandbreakfast_la, curator and early childhood educator, this kids-friendly activity guides participants in producing DIY ovens that harness solar light and amplify energy. Under 𝓛𝓲𝓰𝓱𝓽 𝓖𝓪𝓾𝓰𝓮, which provides a clean-energy resource to the courtyard, this solar cooking activity explores another scale of solar power through accessible materials and means that may be replicated to heat all kinds of foods. During this workshop, s’mores will be on the menu!

This is an open workshop, and we suggest arrival between 12-1pm, leaving ample time for all to enjoy their s’mores by 2:30pm.

Participants are also encouraged to bring a lunch to supplement the workshop’s dessert. Materials & Applications and Craft Contemporary will offer light food and refreshments, and guests are welcome to make a potluck-style contribution to this table. Picnic blankets and other picnicking materials for solar picnicking around the courtyard will also be provided!

📆 Sunday, August 17th
⏰ 12 - 2:30 pm
📍 M&A x Craft Contemporary Courtyard (5814 Wilshire Blvd)
✨ Materials & Applications programs are always free and open to the public

Bit of a blurry photo but today I was thinking about this piece by Christina Favretto at one of the first (2013?) B&B shows, then I saw this photo. It was in a house I shared with Misael in North Miami and the show was called Help You Help Me. Misa and I got into maybe our only fight ever that night (it was about toilet paper and artistic integrity. I’ll spare you for now.) I invited several artists to make a work in the bedroom based on a self help book they chose from a plethora of options donated by Nathaniel at @bookleggerslibrary. Christina made a timeline of my life from birth through my death that went around the entire room, some of it factual and some events like “says “color” for the first time and means it” were just things that, while made up, made sense to her as my friend. I wish I could find more photos of each year, but I really do love the smell of rain on asphalt! Photo is a vintage selfie of mom and I. These early B&B shows were so fun and I’ll never take for granted how lucky I am to make stuff with such great artists and friends. Also, call your mom.

$The Silence, Rachel Bridges June 7th Gallery Hours 2pm-5pm Exibition runs from May 10 - June 29, 2025 Closing event June 28th Curated by our Artist in Residence B&B. A second generation Filipina American, Rachel Bridges was largely unaware of her Chinese ancestry until recently, though in retrospect there were clues, such as the use of Chinese spices in her mother’s traditional Philippine meals. In The Silence, the artist uses family photos, public archives, and other source materials to fill in the gaps of her own family history, much of it erased through generations of conflict in the region. This exhibition explores both Bridges’ Filipino and new-found Chinese heritage through her primary medium of painting.

The Silence looks at changes in Philippine culture through women’s dresses, a nod to new trade and a rise in Chinese immigration during periods of major Spanish and American colonization. Landscapes of the sea and boats represent some of the artist’s own family’s journey from South China to the Cagayan province of the Philippines. Bridges digs through archives in an attempt to understand the events that have shaped her family’s fractured history and to resurrect a forgotten past that, while not spoken of, is deeply felt. Art in the Park at Hermon Park in the Arroyo Seco is a Public/Private Partnership Arts Facility of the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA).
