Today is the final day of September, which means Blood Cancer and Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month is coming to a close. These past few years, I have highlighted different organizations and ways to get involved, written about my experiences and shared memories, explained misunderstood aspect, spoke to the undiscussed parts of survivorship, and more (just scroll back on @beeba.beats to see).
I have been struggling to decide what to do this year, my fifth summer cancer free, the September after I reached five years in remission. It’s hard to explain how much my own pediatric blood cancer diagnosis still affects me to this day. But I tried, and evidently it was too much for an IG caption, so instead I posted screenshots. I have shared almost all of the photos and videos I am comfortable putting out there publicly in an effort to convey the expanse of my experience and to continue to draw attention towards the demands of the field through novel suffering. I have had people steal my photos and use them to get money to “help them pay for treatment”. I have been given incredible access to large platforms and widespread networks. I have had people comment or message ableist and just mean things. I have been eternally fortunate to receive, along with my family, the fruits of the American healthcare system aka community GoFundMes and MealTrains (which truly kept my family afloat). I have had plenty of people simply come to my page for some “grief tourism”, using my suffering just to feel something. I have connected with and grown close to fellow survivors and patients. Social media is such a double edged sword, but I am so grateful for it, and the space it gives me to share my thoughts and experiences, especially now.
Here’s to many many more Septembers spent reflecting and looking forward to

Happy world cancer day. I don’t think I need to tell anyone that cancer sucks. “Suck” is such a nice, easy word for the closest thing to pure misery I’ve ever felt. Here are some pics to humanize how hard cancer is. It’s really easy to accept it’s this horrible thing but every day people have to wake up and remember the fight of their lives awaits them that day and the day after that and the day after that. As completely awful as it was for me, I got lucky. In so many ways. I get to explore survivorship, as difficult it is. I spent my time on the cancer floor, not in the ICU. I could participate partly in online school, my mom could work from the hospital room, we received premier care through Seattle Children’s. So many cancer patients don’t get those things. Too many have to struggle in so many battles I know nothing of. Cancer sucks. Just a reminder.

Thank you so much to everyone who attended our event last week! We are extremely thankful that we were able to hold an in person event for the first time since 2019! A HUGE thank you to everyone who donated to our guild, we were able to raise over $26,000 for uncompensated care @seattlechildrens . Also thank you to our guest patient, @beeba.beets.blood.cancer for sharing her experience battling cancer with us! Looking forward to seeing you all again next year!

Participate in Mercy Haub's fundraiser for Pediatric and Blood Cancer Awareness Month! From September 20th to 24th, there will be tables set up for people to pay for votes, $1 each, to ice one person from each class and a teacher at the September 24th football game! Votes are paid at the business office and all proceeds will go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Getting ready for our event TONIGHT! Doors open at 6. Our silent auction will close at 7:15. We are so excited to be able to host an in-person event this year and to have our guest patient @beeba.beets.blood.cancer ! We are also excited to announce that we will be having a live auction that includes an autographed Russell Wilson jersey generously donated by @whynotyoufdn ! Our guest speaker for this year is local teen Mercy Haub! In 2020 Mercy was diagnosed with Lymphoma. She will be sharing her journey with us in ONE WEEK!! Come to our event to listen to Mercy share her experience fighting cancer and her experience with Seattle Children’s Hospital!

Happy Tribute Tuesday everyone! Today is the day we thank humans who are making a positive difference in other humans' lives during the pandemic. And today we are thanking the humans of Seattle, Washington. More than 500 humans lined the streets to cheer for another human, named Mercy (@Beeba.beets.blood.cancer), who was on her way to the hospital for her last chemo treatment. Mercy has been really sick for a long time and all the humans cheering for her definitely brightened her day. Paws crossed she feels better soon!
