【ＳＴＯＲＹＴＩＭＥ】𝐒𝐄𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐌𝐁𝐄𝐑 𝟏𝟕𝐓𝐇 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟏: 𝐁𝐑𝐔𝐍𝐂𝐇 & 𝐁𝐄𝐀𝐔𝐓𝐘 𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐀𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐁𝐄𝐋𝐋𝐀

I've been told (and people have been correct) that I'm not good at 'tooting my own horn', and I swear, I'm trying to get better. Y'all, sometimes I even forget about some of the amazing things I've accomplished. This here came up in my memories recently. It's one of my favorites. 💜

I had just retuned from living in NYC and wanted to create a space for Black women in the community to come together with someone special.

Back when Twitter was the LICK and us bloggers, artists, creatives, and writers supported each other, my girl @afrobella and I came together for a day of insight, togetherness, sisterhood and good times. Oh, the peeps that came through! People drove up from the U.S and my Toronto ladies came out to Trane Studios in the best way (y'all remember Trane?).

This is also the day that I met two of the most supportive, insane, and major people in my life @beequammie and @jaedalaurez. 😍🫂

What a day it was. A time was had! Lifelong friendships were made, and I had phenomenal support that I couldn't have imagined (big shout out to @kamshuka @tanyamorton23, #afrodelik/Dezi), @liwi68, my family and everyone who had a hand in supporting!).

And big love to my girl @ladyvee and my boy @seansax. Vee was an integral part of this event and kept me sane through it all. Sean of course came through with the chunes and played us out until the doors closed. I miss them both dearly. R. I. P. 💙🤎

When I tell people I’m a beauty storyteller, I mean something much deeper than products, or trends.

Beauty has always been a way for me to talk about the bigger things, like culture, identity, health, memory, representation, womanhood, and the stories that shape how we see ourselves and each other.

I kicked off @tiff_net with “The Beauty of the Movies”, a night about beauty, film and representation—who we see on screen, how we’re seen, and what happens when we take control of telling our own stories.

This is what beauty storytelling looks like to me. 🥂🎬

Thank you to @christinagcheng & @jennifermjoseph & @sohohouse Toronto and @sheamoistureca for partnering with me to bring the night to life, and to everyone who came, shared, laughed and made it what it was.

To kick off @tiff_net I brought together a room full of filmmakers, actors, beauty creatives and friends to talk about the images that shaped us, the stories we want to see, and what it means to create those images for ourselves.

There are a lot of people to thank for making the inaugural Canadian Black Literary Festival into an extraordinary experience.

Today, we want to recognize the BlackLit Emancipation Book Fair vendors who came out and helped us fill McLean Community Centre with books, ideas, creativity and conversation.

Some of you travelled to be there. Some of you brought your books and businesses into a festival for the first time. Some of you have been doing this work for years.

Every one of you made a choice to show up.

And that choice helped make the Book Fair what we hoped it could be: a place where people could discover Black writers, support Black-owned literary businesses, find their next great read, and spend some time in community.

For an inaugural festival, we couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to share that space with.

Thank you to Sarah Jessie Tucker, MJ Willock, Felix I.D. It's been a crazy summer on many levels. I came out of my shell in August, and what a resurgence it has been.

Treats, friends, framily, new traditions, jokes and all; quite frankly, it was everything my soul needed.

@beequammie guided participants through a beginner-friendly Pilates session, followed by tea, snacks, and thoughtful conversation inspired by her powerful book.

As I work towards my mat Pilates instructor certification, one of the questions I'm often asked these days is, "Is Pilates hard?" It can be. It was one of my earliest lessons when I started, but as I learned how to improve my mind/body connection, I was better equipped to meet the challenge.

That's one of the reasons I wanted to get my certification: so that I can show others how important this connection is.

Black women in particular have been disconnected from ourselves in many ways. We make sure everyone else is good, is fed, is nourished, and is connected to the things they need to be -- and somewhere along the way, we lose the connection to ourselves.

At this edition of Pilates & Possibilities, I'm teaming up with @bookclubtoronto.ca to ask the questions that can help us reconnect, and to use a space that will allow us to forge that mind/body connection.

So many of you have been supportive of my certification journey, and as teaching hours are required before I do my final exam, I'd love to have you as part of my Pilates story. Join me on July 26 for a restorative Pilates session, and what I hope will be a restorative conversation about rest, resilience, and connecting with ourselves and each other.
