This tandem bike was gifted to me by my friend Nick who saw it abandoned on the side of the road and asked my friend Sayuni if they could pick it up for them. It lived at their sharehouse in need of some TLC before it was given to me. I took it to My Ride Brunswick and they fixed it for very cheap even though it should have cost much more. This bike was never really meant to work. It has many technical flaws. The two chains like to get tangled when they aren’t synchronised and that’s just the beginning of its many quirks.

I learnt to ride a bike later in life. It felt scary and slightly humiliating being an adult learning something I felt like everyone knew how to do from childhood, as though I was behind and I could never possibly catch up. But now I ride my bike everywhere. The simple pleasures of wind against my cheeks and the sun touching the back of my neck is an indispensable part of my day.

This bike makes a lot of people laugh. It makes a lot of people smile. I take my friends on rides when they are having a hard time because this bike has a way of making people feel better and like they aren’t alone. Friends started recommending friends for a ride when it seemed like they needed it.

There is something about moving in unison with someone else that makes talking about hard things easier. It is the one place worries can’t catch us even if they tried. I think that’s why this bike is so special <3

You can experience the magic of the tandem bike on the 1st of October from 6pm - 8pm at Unassigned Gallery on the opening night of ‘On Connection’

we are accepting donations for Grandmothers Against Removal for each ride - pay as you can :)

We hope to see you there !
