We like nonfiction about the Rust Belt, cultural criticism, innovative memoirs, progressive politics, literary anthologies, and a dash of fiction.

Earlier this month, Read & Run Chicago guide @cynthiareadschi was invited to the Obama Presidential Center for a sneak peek at the President’s 2026 Summer Reading List (and after, was on Barack Obama’s Instagram!).

As one of our beloved guides and the founder and host of @blackgirlsreadchi, we asked Cynthia to give us HER Chicago summer reading list:

📚 Maud Martha by Gwendolyn Brooks
📚 Majestic Hills by Dawn Turner
📚 Chicago House Music by Marguerite L. Harrold
📚 Last Summer on State Street by Toya Wolfe
📚 Strangers Behind Closed Doors by Catherine Adel West
📚 1919 by Eve L. Ewing

Swipe to see why Cynthia loves them—and what they teach us about Chicago.

Which of these Chicago books have you read? 👇 Drop them in the comments!
