Dun Carloway, an Iron Age broch on the Isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides. The well-preserved fortified house still stands nearly nine meters tall, an imposing sight atop a stony hillside. Built around 100AD, it’s somehow both roughly two millennia old and a baby by the island’s standards—the Callanish standing stones are about three thousand years older.

We have seen so many incredible things since we arrived on Orkney, but I think this will rank among my favorite travel experiences for a long while. My sister and brother and I, at about 10pm thanks to the high latitude summer, crossed a pasture full of bulls, traversed a small ravine and stream, climbed over a barbed wire fence in a particularly sketchy fashion, and made our way to this Iron Age house on a dramatic cliff over the ocean. The Broch of Borwick, built around 500 BC and later reconstructed around 300 AD, then excavated in 1881 (and promptly used as a source of stones for construction) is on the western coast of mainland Orkney, and is apparently situated over a sea cave called Hell’s Mouth, though we decided not to scale the cliff and check it out.

Sometimes accidents make the best experiences. The self timer light was blinking on the polaroid when the camera started to wobble and fall, Moises sped over and propped it back up, returning to the group just in time to see that the camera was still pointed down and to the side of @bendostew’s artful original framing. I love the look of joy on all our faces as the camera flashed while we leaned sideways, blindly trying to get in front of the lens while wrangling sun-drunk toddlers. In a way, a great metaphor for trying to weather the vagaries of life. You just have to laugh and lean into it. 😁

Let’s talk about storytelling y’all, because it’s not limited to the biggest, mega glam, insta-worthy milestones. It’s not only for weddings and engagements. Sometimes it’s about starting a water hose fight with your spouse on a weeknight because you just feel like it. Capturing one summer night to look back on can remind you that joy is found in the in between seasons. Joy is in the day-to-day, not at the finish line. And I’m sending all kinds of love to the raddest @airbnb hosts @gwendoham and @bendostew for hosting me, sharing late night wine chats, and running around with a garden hose because the light was pretty.
