Main takeaways from the Athletic Back Pain Course by Sportsmap Part 2

Special mention to @benlustigphysiotherapy. Great to see him present on profiling for athletics with LBP.

A great event for learning @the_sportsmap

Strength training has had its platforms for years. Conditioning hasn’t.

So I built one - @conditiond.app

Here’s the problem it solves. You prescribe a 100 m rep in 25 s. That’s 14.4 kmh for everybody on the team.

🟢MAS 18.0 km/h, that’s 80% MAS. Extensive aerobic work.
🔵MAS 15.5 km/h, that’s 93% MAS. Roughly what you designed.
🟠MAS 13.5 km/h, that’s 107% MAS. Above MAS, anaerobic contribution accumulating.

One session. Three different physiological sessions. Nothing wrong with your coaching, your back end conditioning prescription is failing you.

conditiond does this for you 👇🏼

1️⃣Converts 30-15 IFT, Yo-Yo IR1, 2 km TT, Bronco, beep test or a 6-minute run to MAS, and shows you which equation it used so you can defend the number to a head coach
2️⃣Prescribes once as %MAS or %ASR, then hands every athlete their own distances and target times 3️⃣Cross-trains off the same physiology across nine modalities, for the athlete who can’t run this week
4️⃣Conditiond Coach writes a phase or a full team sport year, released phase by phase off the testing in front of it
5️⃣When the week breaks, and it always does, it re-derives the session around the constraint and tells you what it traded to do it

What it won’t do: replace GPS for external load monitoring. It removes GPS from the prescription problem.

The depth of the platform doesn’t compress into twelve slides, which is why we’re going live…

When - Monday 14th at 8pm AEST
Where - Online to cater for the global audience
Who - Only those on the waitlist are invited

Testing in, groups out, a squad prescribed, then the week broken on purpose and rebuilt in front of you.

The waitlist is the only way in.

🗣️Comment CONDITIOND and I’ll send you the link.

Save this for the numbers above. Send it to a team sport coach who should know about conditiond.

YOU’RE STRONG. SO WHY DOES YOUR BACK
KEEP HURTING?

Strength might not be the whole problem.

YOUR BACK CAN BE STRONG, AND STILL LACK CAPACITY.

You might tolerate heavy loads and the first few sets…

But struggle when FATIGUE builds.

STRENGTH ≠ ENDURANCE

Your trunk doesn’t just need to create force.

It needs to keep doing its job
rep after rep.
set after set.

Athletes with low back pain can demonstrate reduced trunk endurance compared with athletes without LBP is what I learnt from @benlustigphysiotherapy ‘Ben Lustig- PROFILING FOR LBP ATHLETES’

If you have low back pain, as a practitioner you need to look at more than just the athletes back!

TRUNK — can it tolerate repeated work?
HIPS — do they have enough strength + endurance
LEGS — can each side tolerate the work?
ASYMMETRIES — is one side falling behind?

THIS MAY BE WHY…

Your back feels good at the start of training…

but aches afterwards.

Your technique looks great when you’re fresh…

but changes when you’re tired.

You feel better after treatment…

then symptoms return when training ramps up.

THIS IS WHY I DON’T JUST TREAT WHERE IT HURTS.

What does your training demand?

↓

What can your body currently tolerate?

↓

WHERE’S THE GAP?

Then this is where the focus of your training should be

THE GOAL ISN’T JUST TO GET YOU OUT OF PAIN.

It’s to build enough capacity to:

LIFT.
RUN.
TRAIN HARD.
GET STRONG.

And trust your back again.

YOUR BACK KEEPS HURTING EVERY TIME YOU TRAIN?

You might not need to stop lifting.

YOU MIGHT NEED BETTER REHAB.

DM “BACK” and tell me what’s happening

Proud of this doodle.

Love the expansive scope that physio brings in the complexity, variety and individual nature of injury.

Today I attended a spinal conference organised by @physioaustralia

One slide stayed with me.

🩻A spinal surgeon @mr.keat.ooi presented MRI cases showing herniated discs reducing over time — without surgery
(Mianaka et al., 2023)

💡Key takeaways:

• MRI findings don’t always equal pain severity
• Disc tissue can adapt and change
• Mechanical load isn’t just stress — it also influences disc nutrition

Intervertebral discs rely on movement and pressure changes to help with nutrient exchange.

What stood out most wasn’t novelty, but agreement across disciplines.

Structural findings are only part of the story.

Quality care doesn’t come from shortcuts or templates - it comes from strong clinical reasoning, ongoing reflective practice, and high standards. And when our team is supported, our patients get better outcomes.

It's as simple as that.

THIS IS PRIMAL®

A massive thank you to Ben Lustig from Athletic Spine for delivering an outstanding Professional Development session on Lower Back Pain Assessments last year.

This is what setting the standard looks like.
Investing in education. Sharpening clinical thinking. Raising the bar. And doing it all over again.

We’re proud to learn from leaders who challenge the norm and help our team deliver the highest level of care. Our patients deserve nothing less.

This is PRIMAL®.

Day 1 in the books.

@neuromuscular_o ensured I was able to test and try the new leg (AFO) out, and I’m beyond grateful to be back out there on the floor!
