[ ENTER ] LAN Party

Vienna Kim and Benoît Palop take the communal culture of early LAN parties and turn it into a curatorial method. Working between Paris and Tokyo, their practice moves through digital art, gaming, internet subcultures, technostalgia, and the connections that form around screens.

In this month’s ENTER, Vienna and Benoît speak about the curator as an NPC, humor and play as research methods, and what disappears when culture is filtered through platforms and algorithms. They consider how to remain fluent in internet culture without being consumed by it, and why the web’s broken links, obsolete tools, and messy histories are still worth curating.

WEBSITES WEBSITES WEBSITES! (WWW!) celebrates the website as an artistic medium, bringing together twenty artists for Rhizome’s 30th anniversary. Without attempting a definitive history of Net Art, the exhibition explores thirty years of our changing relationship with the internet through browser experiences that invite experimentation, intimacy and critique.

‎Maya Man (b. 1996) is an artist focused on pop culture's soft power and contemporary identity on the internet. Her work examines dominant narratives around femininity, authenticity, and the performance of self. She makes websites, generative series and installations, codes in JavaScript, and treats the browser as her primary exhibition space.

‎Her method is consistent across projects: she harvests real language and formats from social platforms (TikTok captions, Instagram infographics, comment sections), strips them of their original context, and re-stages them through an algorithm. The result sits in an uncomfortable middle ground between sincerity and parody.

‎She holds an MFA in Media Art from UCLA and has exhibited or performed at the Whitney, MOCA Los Angeles and the V&A London.

‎Molly Soda (b. Puerto Rico, 1989) is a New York-based artist working in performance, video, photography and installation. Her practice blurs the line between online user and artist to explore broader shifts in culture, she both participates in and subverts existing consumer trends, aesthetics and technologies, unearthing the emotional undercurrents running beneath them.

‎She first rose to prominence on Tumblr, and she still works the way that platform taught her to: she brings her audience into the work, integrating their feedback and comments into her performances, and she collects digital ephemera and detritus, often combining it with her own personal archives. Her forms are the native forms of the internet, the room tour, the haul, the apology video, the makeup tutorial, the livestream, inhabited completely straight, until the format itself starts to show. $I was tired of thinking/spiraling about how AI can/does/should/shouldn't show up in a creative/artistic practice all alone in my mind (accompanied by the incessant voices of random ppl online who's opinions I dgfa & yet keep seeing everywhere 😪...) so I asked some of my lovely IRL artist/adjacent friends and Internet cousins to think it through with me.
