The Private Table is beginning to take shape through the people, places and ideas we choose to bring into conversation.

Berene sent me this video for this week’s Table, and I think it says a lot about where I want this to go.

I don’t want to talk about wine only in terms of what’s in the glass. I’m much more interested in where you were, who you were with, what was happening around you and why, years later, you can still remember that bottle.

That’s the kind of table I want to build.

Thank you Berene, and thank you Tesselaarsdal Wines for pulling up a chair this early.

Tell me about a wine experience you still remember.

On Tuesday, 29th September, for the first time, we’ll welcome twelve South African winemakers to London for a tasting all day (trade) and all night (private clients) … in anticipation, we have a few words of excitement from our guests 🩶

Here’s Berene Sauls, proprietor of Tesselaarsdal, alumna of Hamilton Russell, enthusiastic supporter of the whole of the Hemel-en-Aarde 🇿🇦 and beloved by all who meet her.

Registrations for trade still open, tickets still available for the general public - on our website (links in bio)

12 years ago Anthony Hamilton Russell made it possible for us to start our journey as wine producers. With his guidance, support, generosity and expertise we find ourselves growing Pinot noir on our own farm in Tesselaarsdal Overberg and recently got approval on the extension of own WO Hartebeestrivier. The wines from our own property will be released 2031. Receiving this picture today made me immensely proud and the proudness goes both ways. Thank you Anthony and team Hamilton Russell Vineyards what a journey! @anthony_hamilton_russell @berene8584 @talitahrv @rossemul @neil_wessels #coolclimatewines #hemelenaardewines #winetourism #sawines #tesselaarsdalwines

Berene Sauls. Don’t forget her name. 🍷

From au pair to owning an acclaimed South African wine label, Berene’s journey to creating Tesselaarsdal wines is the kind of story that stays with you.

This summer, I had the pleasure of sipping bottles of her beautiful Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with Berene over a long, laughter-filled meal; thinking about it still makes me smile. Berene’s wines are the real deal; just like her!

Celebrating women in wine 🍷✨

In celebration of Women’s Day, yesterday’s tasting at Wine Village Hermanus was a beautiful opportunity to raise a glass to the women who continue to shape South Africa’s remarkable wine industry.

I had the privilege of pouring Tesselaarsdal Wines on behalf of Berene Sauls, alongside Ntsiki Biyela, who was sharing her own Aslina Wines. A testimony of two women, two distinctive journeys and two powerful South African wine stories.

Their stories are part of a much bigger one: the incredible women across our vineyards, cellars, businesses and communities whose talent, passion and determination continue to move our industry forward.

Here’s to the women behind the wines, the stories behind the bottles and those continuing to pave the way. 🥂

Happy Women’s Day to all the remarkable women in wine and beyond 🌸
