Improvising pieces in real time on classical guitar, especially in a live professional concert, can be a scary task. However, I chose to do exactly that during the encores for my concerts last week as an Artist-In-Residence for Austin Classical Guitar. Here is a clip of my encore from the second of our 2 concerts, where I improvised a piece on the spot based on some audience suggestions. In this instance, I felt that something sweet and lyrical would be a nice way to finish the evening. Video credit, of course, goes to ACG’s own Todd Waldron.

For those interested, here is the YouTube link to the full concert: https://www.youtube.com/live/CFYPu3yqZ4o?si=hv6MXveesuvMvsd1

I do not ordinarily share full concert videos (partly because every concert inevitably contains moments that I would have liked to execute better), but in this case, this concert feels too special not to share. After all, it’s not every day that I get to share the stage with Leonela Alejandro, David Manzanares-Salguero, and Besa Carney!

In the first part of this concert, Leonela Alejandro performs Django Reinhardt’s “Nuages” (arr. Roland Dyens), David Manzanares-Salguero follows with two preludes from his original work “12 Preludes for Healing,” and then I join the two of them to perform a new work for guitar trio by Besa Carney called “All Is Not Lost.”

Then, after an intermission, at around 43 minutes into the video, I come on and perform a solo set filled with my usual Harrison-isms: my original classical-fusion compositions, some singing, some banter, and (in this case) a decent amount of improvisation.

If you listen to the concert, I hope you enjoy it.

As always, thank you to Austin Classical Guitar for everything! I am extremely excited to return to Austin for our second residency in March. Given that I need to finish a professional solo guitar piece and a student-level ensemble piece for that residency, I have quite a bit of composing to do in the meantime!
