Tour du Mont Blanc trip - Day 2, L’auberge du Mont Blanc, Trient, to Refuge de la Peule, La Fouly(-ish):

Day 1 wasn’t just rough on Lance & I. It was also rough on the others (Trevor, Tomio, Adam, Marshall, and Christian) who stayed on trail - they got rained on and met a ghost* on trail who warned them about their planned route and advised an alternate instead to get into Trient.

Day 2 was originally planned to be a massive day of 23 miles and ~8,000 feet of climbing, and nobody was feeling up to it, so we opted to bypass a good deal of it and called it a reset day. We left early to catch a bus to a train to a bus that got us to La Fouly, having breakfast in Orsières along the way, where I had the most amazing croissant of my life. The second one seemed like a good idea when I started it, but… it was a lot of croissant by the time I was done.

From La Fouly, we still had some hiking to do to get to the refuge. Like most of the days on this trip, we needed to finish by going uphill. And so we did, and found the grand alpine cattle along the way, with their giant bells on ornamented leather collars.

Refuge de la Peule seems to be an operating dairy farm, where they make their own butter, cheese, yogurt, and ice cream - and their cattle were the most courteous I’ve ever seen. Their path down to the trough near the refuge crosses the hiking path, and as they would make their way down, they’d watch the hikers to see who was going first, waiting if needed, and going when clear.

It was a nice change from the ornery beasts that have encountered all up and down the Arizona Trail. I’m not sure they are even the same species. They probably wouldn’t have appreciated it, but I really wanted to go hug them.

*actual ghost status is undetermined, but I know what I believe
