First, let's settle the debate: should you still use hashtags? My answer: yes.
We use hashtags for all of our social media management clients and still get reach from them.
Plus, they're great for helping Instagram categorize your content.
In terms of how many hashtags you should use, the answer is: it depends.
For some clients, I still use up to 30 - I tried with less, and we get better results with more. For other clients, we get better results with 10-15. So, experiment, and see what works for you.
In order to work, they always need to be relevant and targeted.
✓So, here's how I do hashtag research for all of our clients:
[1] First, I come up with keywords related to the client's niche, the client's ideal audience, and the topics we usually post about.
[2] Then, I search all of the keywords - I search for hashtags similar to that keyword, and once I do, Instagram opens up a list of similar hashtags. Under each one, I see the number of uses. I only look at those that have less than around 700k uses. I also look at the hashtags the client's competition is using and write down those that work for us.
[3] Finally, I categorize all of the hashtags by size one group is hashtags that have 10k - 25k uses, one is those that have 25k - 70k uses, then those with 70k - 200k uses, and finally those with 200k -700k uses.
[4] In the end, I have a hashtag bank of hashtags all related to either the client's niche, the ideal audience, or the topic of the post, all categorized by size. For each post, I use a mix of smaller and larger hashtags, and use a few that describe the niche, a few that describe the audience, and a few that describe the post. I make sure to use different hashtags depending on the content pillar of each post, so the hashtags are always relevant.
That's it!
