A piece I had started several years back and just brought out to experiment with some different mediums…homemade natural inks on charcoal on rice (mulberry)paper. Looking at it this morning it looks like the way I feel at this period in life. #WIP aka the changes that come from the privilege of aging.

This drawing was started during first residency @citedesartsparis in 2019 when I just switching to ink from oil. Inspired by the views from the window, through the plane trees, I felt like I was living on a treehouse with the pigeons. Exploring Paris for those two months, discussing the Notre Dame fire that happened a few months prior to my visit, observing the inhabits and infrastructure of Paris and of the Cité des arts all added elements into the drawing. I completed many other ink drawings during that ( and subsequent) residency. But this one was transported back and forth during each of three residencies there ‘19, ‘22, and ‘24 - each adding new elements , of the reconstruction process of Notre Dame, e.g. it was finally completed during the third residency. I also created short films and animations based on the pigeon’s eye view of Paris that accompanies this drawing. The size is 56”x20”

Cite show gallery talk Part 1

1

For many Virginia artists, the residency at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris is more than just time spent abroad; it’s a journey that transforms their creative vision. This August, @artspace_richmond will bring that journey to life with "Artists at the Atelier," an exhibition that captures the essence of Paris as seen through the eyes of some of Virginia’s finest talents. From August 23 to September 21, 2024, visitors will have the rare opportunity to explore artworks deeply influenced by the vibrant culture and artistic legacy of the City of Light.

The story of this exhibition is one of connection—between Virginia and Paris, between artists and their muses, between past experiences and present creations. Curator @bethbjasperart, who herself has completed three residencies at the Cité, reflects on how her time in Paris reshaped her art and forged invaluable bonds with the global arts community. As she leads a gallery talk on August 24, she will unravel the narratives behind each piece, including those by alumni like @mapierce2001, Elisabeth Flynn-Chapman, and the late Myron Helfgott, whose enduring spirit will be celebrated through his work. This exhibition is not just a showcase; it’s an invitation to step into the world of these artists, to see Paris through their eyes, and to experience the magic that only such a journey can create.
