🔴 Vendu–Sold 2026 | Lot 10
Beth Frey, Self-portrait as an attempt (ad infinitum), 2025
@bethisms
@mcbridecontemporain

“Cette œuvre est tirée de ma série Self-portrait (2025), dans laquelle les images ne me ressemblent en rien. J’utilise plutôt l’autoportrait comme un cadre conceptuel ; en identifiant les pièces comme telles, cela prend la forme d’une performance.”
*
“This piece is from my 2025 Self-portrait series. The image bears no likeness to me. Instead, I use the self-portrait as a conceptual framework; by identifying the piece as such, it becomes rendered as a performance.”

Beth Frey’s watercolors invite viewers into a vibrant and aqueous world populated by what the artist describes as “beautiful failures”: cartoonishly grotesque beings suspended between joy and unease, innocence and perversity, attraction and discomfort. Hovering between abstraction and representation, these figures often appear fluid, blobby, and transformed, resisting fixed identities while embracing contradiction.

Rendered through layers of luminous color and expressive mark-making, Frey’s paintings use humor and the grotesque as strategies to challenge expectations surrounding gender, beauty, and selfhood. The works are visually seductive yet emotionally elusive, occupying a space that cannot be easily categorized.

Part of an ongoing process of translation within the artist’s broader practice, these watercolors emerge from a dialogue between drawing, language, and digital imagery before returning to the handmade intimacy of paint on paper. The result is a series of works that are playful, disorienting, and deeply human, offering a world where imperfection becomes a source of possibility rather than limitation.

This is something I’ve been meaning to write about for a long time now, but I never quite knew how to articulate it (because we all know that social media is where nuance goes to die). Some of you have probably wondered why I haven’t posted any of my weirdo sentientmuppetfactory content for a long time. The short answer is, “Well, it’s complicated.” Aligning oneself as “pro-AI” or “anti-AI” feels reductive here, but the rise of slop and ethical and ecological implications of AI usage have all started to weigh down on me and I struggled to continue to have my name associated with AI as its place in our lives became increasingly dystopian. Additionally, as a visual artist whose practice predates my usage of AI tools, I felt like this experience broke my brain, made me doubt my own abilities, fizzled up my already minuscule attention span. This is not a forever good-bye; I’m still trying to figure out what I’m doing here with this account and my creations. AI isn’t going anywhere, and I still believe we need to develop an AI literacy and that artists have an opportunity to use this powerful tool to challenge conventional modes of thinking because the bad guys are already having a heyday with it. But in the meantime, enjoy this article by @chris.hampton for @cbcarts who gave me the space to describe all my complicated feelings and how they fed in to my latest show Autoeffigies at @mcbridecontemporain . I’ll put a link to the article in my bio for those interested. We also hear from the wonderful @dissociative_dreams who is making powerful work on here in a way that is authentic to them. You can always find me making my analog weirdo art over at @bethisms if that floats your boat. Sending much love to you all 🩷
