What a fascinating earthworm survey! On Saturday we were at @kneppwildlandfdn and observed some interesting phenomena. Almost all the worms we found were sub-adult, and many were still wrapped up in a ball in a state of torpor. This is a response from worms to hot dry weather; they do it to maintain moisture. Some worms had clearly been in this state for so long that plant roots had colonised them looking for moisture, which they may have found in the earthworm's secretions. Once awoken, the worms wiggled free of the roots and seemed non-the-worse for the experience. We also found several deceased, dried-up worms, some still wrapped up in balls. These observations are likely due to the extreme heat and dryness of the summer, but we will only know if it is a more widespread phenomena after our forthcoming surveys across the rest of the Nature Sense network. We are still looking for volunteers! Sign up using the link in our bio. @wealdtowaves | @kneppwildland | @sussexuni | @mostlyscarce | #earthworms | #citizenscience | #ecology | #nature

Last month I got to join a super fun BTO Youth Rewilding Safari at Knepp, hosted by @gee.wildlife and @ry_thenatureguy . It was such a fun day packed with incredible wildlife, valuable learning and inspiring people. On our walk, we got to watch and learn about bird ringing, where we were lucky enough to see a Lesser Whitethroat, a Greater Whitethroat, and even one of Knepp’s flagship species, a Nightingale! We also saw beaver dams and the beaver den, fallow Deer, and found Voles and Slow‑worms sheltering under reptile tins. Birds-wise, it was amazing to watch White Storks nesting and flying overhead, to see a Cuckoo, and to see and hear such a variety of raptors, waders and songbirds, and even a Turtle Dove and a Raven. Knepp has an amazingly diverse and constant backdrop of birdsong as you walk through it. Thank you to @gee.wildlife , @ry_thenatureguy , @mostlyscarce , @bexonearth , BTO and Knepp, and to everyone who came along. It was amazing to meet such a community of people who care deeply about rewilding and nature recovery, and such a great learning experience. #rewilding #whitestorks #beavers #birdwatching #wildlife
