October 15th is White Cane Safety Day, a day to recognize the independence of people who are blind or visually impaired and the white cane that helps them navigate the world. It’s also a great opportunity to talk with your kiddos about what a white cane is, why it matters, and how we can all be respectful and supportive. 💛🤍

When children learn about differences from a young age, they grow up with more empathy, understanding, and inclusion in their hearts. Every conversation helps build a community where everyone can explore, play, and thrive together! 🌍 Thank you @beyondblindness for the grown up tip!

💜 It Was a Beautiful Day for Our First Annual TLC Pathways Conference!

Take a look back at some of the special moments from it.

We began the morning with welcoming remarks from our Executive Director, Maura Byron, Larry Landauer from the Regional Center of Orange County, and Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento, Orange County Second District, who helped us kick off this exciting milestone.

Attendees then headed into their first workshops across our two pathways, Newly Diagnosed Families and Transitioning to Adulthood, where they learned from knowledgeable presenters and had opportunities to ask questions.

Following our morning sessions, everyone gathered for lunch and our Resource Fair, connecting with local organizations, learning about available services, and discovering resources to support their families.

The afternoon continued with our final two rounds of workshops before we came together for closing remarks and our Parent Panel, ending the day with shared experiences, valuable perspectives, and meaningful discussions.

💜 A Look Back at Our First Annual TLC Pathways Conference!

What a meaningful day of learning, connection, and community! Parents, caregivers, professionals, and community members came together to explore workshops across our two TLC Pathways, learn from and ask questions of our incredible speakers, and connect directly with Orange County agencies and organizations at our Resource Fair.

From navigating a new diagnosis to preparing for the transition to adulthood, our goal was to provide families with information, resources, and connections they can carry with them beyond conference day.

Today was White Cane Safety Day in the City!

Thank you to @beyondblindness for coming and sharing your blindfolded obstacle course. Today we learned about all of the five senses, and took home some great resources from our friends. ✋

Plus, hear from experienced Orange County professionals throughout the day during workshops across our two learning pathways:

🛣️ Pathway A: Newly Diagnosed Families
Learn about navigating life after a diagnosis, early intervention, developmental services, IEPs, 504 Plans, educational rights, therapies, community resources, and supporting the whole family.

🛣️ Pathway B: Transitioning to Adulthood
Explore turning 18, healthcare and benefits, employment, day programs, independent living, self-determination, legal options, financial planning, and adult services.

💜Who should attend the TLC Pathways Conference, and why is it important?

Our Executive Director, Maura Byron, or as we call her, Mo, took some time to share why this conference was created and why this information can be so valuable for families of individuals with developmental disabilities, caregivers, and members of our community.

Whether you’re a parent or caregiver navigating a new diagnosis, preparing for the transition to adulthood, or simply want to better understand how to support individuals with developmental disabilities, this conference is for you.

There is so much to navigate at every stage. Knowing what resources are available, what questions to ask, and what steps to take next can make a meaningful difference for individuals and their families.

We invite anyone who wants to learn alongside families, professionals, and others in our community to join us. When we take the time to educate ourselves today, we help create a more informed and supportive community for generations to come.
