Using an ultrasound probe on a gelatin mold filled with small items can be a fun learning experience. Students in our Surgical Subspecialties Interest Group enjoyed hosting a variety of activities for members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Central Kansas, inspiring them to consider health care career opportunities. 🩺

Jamison Macke, fourth-year medical student, and Kale Mills, third-year medical student, are co-founders of the Surgical Subspecialties Interest Group who initiated this collaboration due to their prior experience volunteering with Boys & Girls Clubs chapters in Manhattan and Wichita, respectively. They agreed this might help fill a hole for health care career days.

“This raised a concern,” said Macke, “as there potentially may be many students who aren’t even entertaining a career in medicine simply due to a lack of visibility. So this motivated us to take the initial steps in formulating a plan to help address this issue."

Registration for Storytime Village’s annual LEAP summer camp is NOW OPEN! This year we’re teaming up with The Boys and Girls Club of South Central Kansas to host our annual summer camp where students learn entrepreneurship while being guided through all of the phases of book development: writing, illustration, publishing, marketing and selling.

At the LEAP Summer Camp Program, it is our mission to inspire a lifelong love of reading through learning, entrepreneurship, and art projects.

Leap Camp is a summer camp program that stands for Learning, Entrepreneurship, and the Arts Program. Students who participate in this program will participate in daily writing and illustration workshops. By the end of the program, each student will have produced their very own published book and will have the opportunity to invite family and friends to their book signing. Students will also be recognized as published authors and will receive an acknowledgment award for completing the program. Also, each week the students will have the opportunity to travel to various places around Wichita, KS as well as participate in extracurricular activities to keep their minds and bodies busy!

The 2023 LEAP Summer Camp runs from June 5, 2023 - July 28, 2023
