Yesterday, we welcomed new University of Southern Indiana Faculty with a tour at the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art. We’d like to take time here to thank these individuals for visiting, and for their efforts serving USI students. Thanks additionally to Historic New Harmony @historicnewharmony for their efforts making this possible. We are excited by opportunities to strengthen partnerships within the USI community with programs and exhibits at the gallery, and thankful for the positive reactions to current gallery exhibits through Sept. 4, Aya Rodriguez-Izumi’s ‘Signals’ and BG Projects @bgprojects ‘Light and Form: Prints and Sculpture’ by Bernard Hagedorn and Deborah Hutchinson Hagedorn. Two wonderful new shows up at @nhgca and @bgprojects in new Harmony, Indiana! In the main gallery space, Signals by @__iamaya__ blew me away with it size and color. The flags move slightly with the air in the room, so the whole show feels very alive. In the back gallery, Light And Form features recent print and sculpture works by Deborah Hutchinson-Hagedorn and @bernardhagedorn. I've been an admirer of their work for a while now, but this is the first time I've seen a large body of it shown together. The works play off of each other beautifully. There are also a couple of Bernard's sculptures that make me think of coiled up strings of flags, which makes an interesting tie in between the two bodies of work. Lots to see in these spaces, so if you're in the area, head over to new Harmony and get lost in these shows! #nhgca #ayarodriguezizumi #deborahhagedorn #bernardhagedorn #newharmonyindiana

Today’s post highlights “minor gesture” (2025) from artist Sheldon Till-Campbell’s @sheldontillcampbell current solo exhibit ‘Ground Figures’ on view through tomorrow, Saturday, July 11. This 38x38 oil on canvas work is another piece that comes out of Sheldon Till-Campell’s MFA thesis. Hanging in the Back Gallery (or BG Projects Space @bgprojects ,) the first thing the viewer will notice when confronted with this work is that it is hung lower than the standard height for gallery works; it dips toward the ground past the buildout display feature on the wall it occupies alone. As seen in the first image, to the direct right when facing ‘minor gesture’ is “Map of the clouds right now,” and to its left is “Model.” Thus it hangs between something hung higher that references the sky, and a sculptural piece that sits on the floor: a transition of sorts. It also hangs across from “The back 40, #3,” which is very small and brightly lit in the middle of the wall, a great contrast to the larger and dimly lit minor gesture. In agreement with its humble lighting and low position on the wall, the colors of the oil painting are muted, dirty browns like those on a vehicle that has driven through mud. The splash of lighter brown on the left side of the painting is starkly separated from the uniform tone of the rest of the canvas, and it is another piece that is quiet and takes up space without offering any figurative forms or pronounced colors. It is allowed to be, and to be on its own wall in its own unusual position. It is in conversation with its similar piece in the main gallery, “untitled accumulation” (2026) which also utilizes shades of brown and lies not only low, but on the floor itself. We welcome you to come visit this work and the rest of the exhibit before it closes tomorrow! The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art is open regular hours Tuesday - Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT.

Join us for an Artist Talk with Tory Schendel-Vyvoda @toryschendel (image 5!) this Saturday, March 21st from 10 a.m. at the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art’s BG Projects. Learn from artist and Evansville arts leader Schendel-Vyvoda about her “Collective I” series work on view (image 2, and image 3 detail on “Janice Hale, Evansville African American Guest Services Associate”) in New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art-BG Projects’ group exhibit, ‘Locality.’ All are invited to participate and ask questions, and there will be light refreshments. Much like the retrospective on Exhibit Columbus in the main gallery, Tory’s artwork centers arts/ arts administration professionals (especially local individuals with the works on view) and her personal artist network to express a unique perspective on contemporary art and community. Gain insight from Tory about these resonant themes connected to her artwork and current PHD dissertation research, while getting a more in-depth look at the exhibit. Tory Schendel-Vyvoda is an artist and curator currently residing in Evansville (IN). Drawn to mixed media in her art, her current body of work, “Collective I,” has been shown across the United States. She works for the Evansville African American Museum, the Lamasco Microgallery, and the University of Evansville. “Locality: An Exhibit About Culture and Place in Evansville and New Harmony” will be on view in the BG Projects through April 11th, 2026. Featuring both 2-D and 3-D artwork, this is a New Harmony and Evansville-based artists group exhibit including illustrator Jerry Baum , oil painter Michael Patrick Bailey @michaelpatrickbailey , illustrator/Posey County historian Stanley Campbell, fashion designer Emily Gartner @emilygartnerdesigns , photographer Jonathan Hamilton @hammyorkestar , sculptor Amy Musia @amymusia , and mixed media artist/curator Tory Schendel-Vyvoda @toryschendel . The “Transcendence.” Exhibition Curated by @ventiko at the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art is as exciting as it is varied! Connecting to layers of mythology and religion built up in New Harmony, the Indianapolis-based artists interpret with a degree of flexibility to SPARK meditative thought. Rachel Leah Cohn’s work on display in the main gallery is highlighted here for the thematic progression seen across different media into the Mikvah installation behind the curtain in the @bgprojects — THIS is a call to action to visit us 10a-5p CST Tues-Sat and to see this exhibit up until June 28th, 2025!!

Yesterday was the last day to view Grow Up! Thank you to all of the people who went out to go see what Jade and I have been cooking up. Although my time taking art classes at USI is coming to an end, there’s still lots to see from me before I graduate in May after my student teaching! In early January, I will be participating in my first artist residency, at Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft in North Carolina as a Mix-Media Resident. Later January, I along with a couple of my art education buddies are putting together an ArtEduc exhibition in the USI Student Gallery called “The Wheels on the Bus”. In April, Payton Henn and I are having a duo exhibition called “Toy with Me” in the USI Student Gallery full of collaborative and individual soft sculpture, paper mache, and woodworking recreations of toys. I’ve also got a couple of ideas swirling around in my head so we will see. Love you all! Smooches! Thank you Benny for taking these cute little pics of me at Grow Up! #longlivegrowup #growup #artexhibition #usiceramics #usiartanddesign #usi #thewheelsonthebus #toywithme #arteducation #mixmedia #papermache #softsculpture #woodworking #ceramics #contemporaryceramics #sculpture #contemporarysculpture #installation #installationart

REMINDER that THIS SATURDAY is the LAST DAY to see GROW UP! It hurts my little taffy heart 💔 but this Saturday is the last day ever to view Grow Up! by Jade and I! It is the coolest and cutesiest duo art exhibition BG Projects, and USI has ever seen! Now is the time to take a well-deserved break (and get in your last arts experience passport) and attend the closing reception to Filled Up 5 from 3 to 5 this Saturday where you can hit two apples with one arrow and get your last little peak at our art! #usiceramics #growup #bgprojects #nhgca #contemporaryart #contemporarysculpture #contemporaryceramics #ceramics #multimedia #mixmedia
