it’s #10BeforeTheEnd season! what a time to be alive!

•

❔: what’s one book you’re hoping to read before the end of the year?

❕: these are THE ten books I have decided I MUST finish before 2025 wraps up!

•

the real kicker for me is honestly where the heck I’ve been.

last time I said I was touching grass [lol] and while some splendid grass-touching was also done in this most recent “break,” I largely spent it recovering from another dental surgery. whoop dee doo!

[content warning: this next paragraph has some details about my dental surgery]

early september, I, Ukamushu — being of sound mind, although in quite a bit of pain — walked into the dentist’s office with 32 teeth and was wheelchaired out with 27 🫡 it was quite a doozie! wisdom teeth [and my darling problem child of a premolar] AMIRITE?

[end of content warning]

anyway, jokes aside, I’ve been thinking of what it looks like to have hobbies that are a bit more detached from social media. for those who may not know, I recently completely deactivated my tiktok and my threads. I found the apps uncomfortable to borderline depressing sometimes [in ways that instagram, interestingly, isn’t. shout out to community that keeps hope alive fr fr]. I feel like my reading life over the past couple years has largely been dictated [or in the very least heavily influenced] by social media. so, I wanted to rediscover my love of reading as a separate entity from my enjoyment of booksta.

to that end, I had multiple reading dates with my partner, I started a book chat / channel at work [look at me go!], I spiralled a conversation with a business consultant WHO DOESN’T EVEN READ into a book recommendation session [it was wonderful]!

and, in the wise words of the prophetess Kelly Clarkson, “Here I am, once again!” I would very much like to stick around this time so I’m holding myself to my “For goodness’s sake, JUST POST!” goal 🙌🏿

if you don’t see any of these books in my end-of-year wrap-up, you are free to come to my DMs and scream about it. I will do my best to have that not happen 😅🙏🏿

love y’all! ~ 🍁

Just last month, I saw a bookstagrammer with 50k+ follower give me a faux five-star review without having read the book and it reminded me of the time when I was an indie author.

During that journey, I discovered something perhaps unique to BookstagramIndia: paid engagements. Big bookstagram reviewers who offered to take your book for a “genuine review” and for a fee. I didn’t mind the money bit then (I don't do it any longer). After all, they were exposing my book to their audience, taking a chance on a debut author, maybe that’s just how the system works, I naively thought.

The experience was harrowing. I received glowing five-star reviews… except I or rather anyone could tell most of them hadn’t read the book. Back cover summary reviews, you know the kind. What was worse, these reviews would arrive months – sometimes over a year after the agreed on deadline – and way, way after I had paid them. I felt ...bad. I didn’t want fake praise. But back then, I thought I was too small to question the system.

Over time, I discovered the undercurrent of Bookstagram: genuine readers. Some charge, some don’t. But they always read the book and share authentic reviews – reviews that helped me become better as a writer.

So, last month, when it happened again, I confronted this 50k+ followers bookstagrammer. She admitted (in writing) that she hadn’t had time to read the book and just put something out and had lied to me at first claiming she’d “thoroughly enjoyed it.” I was like why? I didn't want this. I won't take her name but this trend deeply bothers me especially when I see genuine readers get overlooked in the Bookstagram space because of factors that have nothing to do with reading.

So this is me doing my bit to address it. Let’s celebrate honesty over hollow stars.

PS The person who didn't like my book because he doesn't like mythofantasies and who is a genuine reviewer: theobviousmystery
