As the New York City Council readies to vote tomorrow in favor of banning horse-drawn carriages in the city, we take this look back at the historic role Murray Hill and Kips Bay played in transforming animal welfare in New York and across the nation.

The Council's vote is on Romanch's Law, legislation that would phase out the city's horse-drawn carriage industry by June 1, 2028. The bill follows the June death of 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan in a Central Park carriage accident and years of debate over animal welfare and public safety.

The vote comes during another milestone year for animal protection in the city.

Earlier this year, Council Speaker Julie Menin and Council Member Harvey Epstein, whose district covers a large part of Kips Bay, spearheaded the creation of the City Council's first-ever Animal Welfare Caucus.

Chaired by Epstein, with Karolina Gomez serving as executive director, the new caucus is dedicated to humane treatment, animal-protection legislation, policy reform and budget investments.

Please swipe through this visual history about our neighborhood and animal welfare.

Last week #teambuchwald went out and volunteered within the LA and New York community.

📍 The LA office headed to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank to sort fresh produce and spent time at SpcaLA to create enrichment toys for adoptable pets.

📍 The New York office worked with City Meals to deliver meals to those in need as well as built cat beds, organize donations, and clean around the Bideawee adoption center.

Melo from @bideawee and Coconut from @muddypawsrescuenyc have both been waiting for their furever homes for a long time!

If you’re looking for an only pet who will love you like no other, Melo is your dude!

Want a social butterfly who likes people and other dogs? Coconut is the gal for you!

Both dogs are so different but each are as deserving of a home and canvas space.

Reach out to their respective rescues to meet these babes!

The portraits go home with them!

Max-imum effort. Max-imum cuteness. Max-imum potential🐾

This German Shepherd/Corgi mix was found wandering the streets of NYC. Now he’s at Bideawee Manhattan, ready to give his all to his forever family. Maximus picks training skills up fast, and TRUST that he’d happily fit every toy in his mouth 🧸

Teaching him core conditioning was the highlight of my week. Grateful to @bideawee for letting me get to know Max. Time with him was a gift, and I hope his forever family finds him soon🐾

Could you be the one he’s been waiting for? Visit Max at Bideawee Manhattan!
