A historic milestone for neurosurgical care at BIDMC!

This month, we officially transition from being a division within the Department of Surgery to become an independent Department of Neurosurgery—and we are proud to introduce our inaugural Chair, Gavin Dunn, MD, PhD.

Dr. Dunn joins us from MGH, where he has served as Director of the Brain Tumor Immunology and Immunotherapy Program since 2021, and serves as Professor of Neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School. A leader in neurosurgical oncology, his clinical practice and research focus on primary and metastatic brain cancers, innovative immunotherapies, and comprehensive general neurosurgery. Beyond the OR and the lab, he serves as a Captain in the U.S. Navy Reserve Medical Corps.

A dedicated contributor to the neurosurgical community, Dr. Dunn is a Fellow of the AANS, and an active member of the CNS and the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC), having also served on the Board of Directors for the Society for Neuro-Oncology (SNO).

Dr. Dunn’s NIH-funded research focuses on understanding the immune response to brain tumors and the fundamental basis of CNS immunobiology. His work on the Brain Tumor Immunity cycle involves preclinical models and translational work that has resulted in the development of novel personalized cancer vaccine clinical studies. He is a prior Cancer Research Institute Lloyd J. Old STAR award recipient and co-chair of a clinical trial through the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Neuro-Oncology focused on recurrent glioblastoma.

It was an honor to introduce Mayor Wu this morning at the ground breaking for the Lavine Bekenstein Cancer Hospital at Dana-Farber! We broke ground today, but can't wait for the ribbon cutting in 2031. What an exciting day for medicine, innovation and Boston!

We’re excited to introduce our 2026 Humanitarian of the Year! Dr. Feuerstein has dedicated his life to improving care for his IBD patients at BIDMC. Dr. Feuerstein is deeply involved in the Chapter’s Healthcare Professional Committee and the Foundation’s advocacy efforts to ensure that treatment decisions are rooted in clinical guidance.

Several outstanding students who have exhibited academic excellence, dedication to service, and enthusiasm for vascular surgery have been awarded the scholarship.

Scott Pray recently had the opportunity to meet scholarship recipient ⭐, Joyce Nishimwe. Joyce shared that through her experience shadowing Dr. Hamdan she "learned more about procedural medicine observing different OR cases and developed a deeper understanding of how to develop her med school application materials."

We are inspired by you Joyce and can't wait to see what the future holds!

Meet Jenny Potter, who became the HMS dean for students in the Program in Medical Education this summer. She is excited about supporting medical and dental students throughout their journey of becoming the clinicians and scientists they hope to be.

“My favorite part about working with students is getting to know them as people and getting to know what motivates them, and also what stands in their way, and then working together to figure out ways to help them achieve their goals,” Potter said.

Potter, who is also a primary care physician and HMS professor of medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, previously served as advisory dean and director of the Castle Society, one of five academic advising communities to which all medical and dental students are assigned, and director of student well-being programs.

Sidhu Gangadharan, MD, Division Chief of Thoracic Surgery and Interventional Pulmonology, spoke with CBS News on Pope Leo XIV’s recent lung cancer diagnosis and surgical procedure. Dr. Gangadharan provided insight into the recovery expectations commonly associated with a partial lobectomy, noting the initial reduction in lung capacity. With good starting lung function, most patients will be able to accommodate the loss of lung with very minimal impact on overall quality of life once they recover.

As most people know, I never post on IG but thought this moment in my life, represented some special thanks. If you don’t know, I was diagnosed with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (A1AD) that caused my liver to fail at the end of July. It’s a rare inherited disorder that nobody in my family knew we had. I was quickly worked up for a liver transplant and placed on transplant list around mid-August.

As I waited for a transplant, some incredible coworkers were worked-up to be living donors. @_itsjbbb ended up being a perfect match and made the ultimate sacrifice without hesitation. I’m incredibly grateful for my hero @_itsjbbb for donating 62% of her liver to me. Without her, I would not be alive today.

Of course, none of this could have been done without the unbelievable staff by @bidmctransplant at @bidmchealth. Special thanks to @dpratt8 and all of the cardiac surgery team @surgery_bidmc for their incredible support during this process. Also thanks to Erik and Jess’s parents for their endless support.

Finally, none of this could have been done without the ultimate support by my wife @cegan75. The last couple of months have not been easy and there will be many more months ahead that without your support, would not be possible.

@_itsjbbb by giving me a piece of yourself, you have given me something even more precious - the gift of time. More time with my family. More memories. More Christmases, birthdays, and ordinary days that I might otherwise have missed. ❤️

Team Katherine brings together staff, faculty, friends, and family in support of a beloved colleague who is bravely navigating a breast cancer diagnosis.

We walk in solidarity with Katherine and with all those whose lives have been touched by breast cancer. We honor the courage of those who have faced this disease, celebrate those who continue to fight, remember those we have lost, and stand together in hope for a future without breast cancer.
