The last day of #peanuttour22 still has me in awe. We visited @mananutrition to see 🥜 at the center of some incredible humanitarian work. #ad

MANA is a ready-to-use therapeutic food made with 🥜 butter paste + milk + vitamins & minerals being used to fight world hunger.

When our tour guide showed us the arm band indicating the size of these children’s arms, it was truly shocking. Malnutrition is more deadly to kids than malaria, tuberculosis, and AIDS combined. The statistics were truly awful. But with the production of MANA, those numbers are taking a turn.

The paste is safe unopened w/o refrigeration for up to 2 years. 1 case of MANA is enough to save a child’s life - 3 packets a day for 6 weeks.

Since so many impoverished areas don’t have access to potable water, many forms of aid actually end up being deadly. Since liquid is created from the 🥜 grinding process, these pouches eliminate the need to add water.

The facility in Fitzgerald, GA can roast 12k pounds of 🥜 per hour. The tanks that say “MANA 2124” are a visual indicator of how many children each tank can save - 2124.

With the help of a silent partner, they are truly doing incredible work toward fighting world hunger. They’re expanding to another location soon and will be able to produce 3-4 times more than they already are.

There are many ways you can support the work MANA is doing if you’re interested. Head to mananutrition.org to learn more.

For a bit of levity, I learned that Fitzgerald, GA is known for wild chickens and that a former politician had a failed plan to build a giant metal 🐓 that’d become a topiary + bed & breakfast (yes, you read that right). I couldn’t pass up a chance for a photo op!

I had a fab smoked ham, pimento cheese, & grilled tomato sandwich w broccoli salad from @Ourdailybreadfitz on the ride back to Atlanta. We also stopped at @bucees, which was like the most massive convenience store/truck stop I’ve ever been to. I could have easily spent half a day (and big $) there.

Thank you again to my friends at @gapeanuts & @peanut.butter.lovers for SUCH a wonderful experience! Stay tuned for 🥜 recipes inspired by my trip! #bigflavorstravel

Day 2 of #peanuttour22 took us on a wild ride through peanut breeding, genetics, and sustainability initiatives involved in the 🥜 industry. #ad

We hit @universityofga Tifton campus to see the work researchers are doing in the field of precision agriculture. The use of GPS & drones helps monitor crops & reduce pesticide usage. This allows treatments to only be applied to the precise areas vs. spraying an entire field.

They are also working on technology to help monitor the soil to know when the crops need to be watered, taking rainfall into account, instead of watering on a set schedule. This helps save water and fuel costs for irrigation equipment so farms can use less fungicides, pesticides, & water.

Dr. Nino Brown described the labor intensive process of 🥜 breeding. As self-pollinators no 🐝 are involved in this process. Hybrids varieties are created from combining the flower of 2 different 🥜 varieties. The whole process of breeding & testing in various conditions for yield stability takes 10-12 years!

Lunch at @gapeanuts HQ included grilled PB&J sandwiches w homemade peach pepper jelly (YUM!). We learned a lot about the ways the industry is utilizing 🥜 as “nature’s zero waste plant”.

Since 🥜 are so nitrogen-rich, farmers don’t need to use fertilizer in their soil! All the plant parts are utilized by the industry, including turning the hulls into ant bait & pellets for 🐱 litter. @peanut.butter.lovers also shared studies on health benefits & updated early introduction guidelines for allergy concerns.

Between the farmer & buyer is the peanut buying point. They work 16 hour days during 🥜 season cleaning & drying, inspecting, & grading crops.

The shelling plant blanches & seasons the 🥜. Harvest averages 120-140k tons/year. They’re processed and go on to produce 180 million pounds of product.

Dinner at @thelocaltifton was phenomenal! I loved the 🥜 hummus, beef carpaccio, the 🥜 soup was the best I’ve ever had, the 🧀 board was 🤩 (I need to try making pimento cheese!), & dessert was a decadent PB mousse.

This was a jam-packed day, I learned a TON, and gained a whole new appreciation for the work that goes into 🥜 production! #bigflavorstravel

Did you know that Georgia’s official state crop isn’t 🍑 - it’s actually 🥜! #ad I had a whirlwind trip with @gapeanuts and @peanut.butter.lovers for #peanuttour22 last week . I knew a little bit about how peanuts grew, but was in no way prepared for how much goes into producing one of my favorite ingredients.

GA is the biggest producer of peanuts in the country, and 70% of them go to peanut butter. There are 4 different types: Runner, Valencia, Spanish, & Virginia. Runners have the most 🥜 flavor and roast easily, so they’re mostly used for PB.

We kicked off Monday at @universityofga Griffin campus to learn all about how researchers and Peanut Curators (actual job title! How cool is that?!) are helping 🥜 crops in GA go from family farms to homes around the world.

With the help of the @usda Seed Bank, they are working on protecting agriculture and our global food supply. The seed bank stores over 1600 different plant species, & sent out over 50k seed samples to researchers around the world in 2021. This allows them to do things like breed in desirable traits like disease resistance, taste, & size. into future crops.

We also checked out @ugaextensionfoodscience to see how the Food Product Innovation & Commercialization Center is helping develop upcoming food businesses. They’re looking for more sustainable ways to process products & support local agriculture & the economy and I. Am. Here. For. It. 👏🏻 #flashfactory

After a delicious lunch at @rookerymacon (where you better believe I got the Jimmy Carter milkshake!), we headed to Ross Kendrick’s family farm to see a peanut harvest in action!

To harvest, a digger/shaker digs under the vines, shakes off excess soil, then turns them up to dry in the field for 3 days before the combine comes in to pick them.

This year, farmers are faced with the difficult task of harvesting early to allow for the required drying time. If they waited too long, the storm could completely wipe out their crops. If they aren’t dry enough, they aren’t able to be stored properly.

We had a wonderful seafood buffet at Ross’s cabin after a long day on the farm. SUCH an incredible day! #bigflavorstravel Standing in a peanut field holding freshly harvested peanut plants.

One month ago today I turned ✨40✨ out in Long Beach, California. I took a solo trip, rented an @airbnb for the first time ever, spent time with some of my west coast friends, and had the time 👏🏻 of 👏🏻 my 👏🏻 life 👏🏻!

I took so many photos while I was there but was busy enjoying every moment, and only shared a little of it on my IG stories. I figured I’d do a few posts sharing some of my favorite CA moments over the next few weeks so you can see how much goodness the LBC has to offer. 🌊

My friend Bambi treated me (and our partner in crime, Tana) to a beyond epic birthday brunch at @selva.lbc - a drop-dead goooorgeous restaurant from a former colleague of hers, @chef_carlosjurado.

The meal was phenomenal - right up my culinary alley. We ordered pretty much the entire menu and everything was divine! Apparently this spot is more known for dinner than brunch - I can’t imagine how good dinner must be if brunch it this delicious.

The ingredients were super fresh, plating was beautiful, and the service was superb. Swipe through to see what we ordered, and if you’re in the Long Beach, CA area do yourself a favor and have brunch here, STAT! I’d be back in a heartbeat if I didn’t live a few thousand miles away.

Thank you again to my girls @culinarysnap & @toothpicktana for making my 40th birthday so very special!

TO EAT: {Ossining} @brothersfishnchips is one of our favorite restaurants and we have enjoyed the multi-course tasting menu on several occasions. For any seafood lovers out there, I highly recommend a visit! And thanks to @bigflavors for introducing us to this restaurant several years ago!

However, they have a takeout restaurant on the other half of their space, which I had never ordered from, until recently. Several people from work were doing a lunch takeout order so I decided to try the fried shrimp and fries. Everything was hot and crispy! And the shrimp was delicious! While I don’t want to eat fried food all the time, this was such a delicious lunch treat! Plus, they have lots of other options for me to try!

Besides the fried shrimp the takeout menu includes ceviche, mussels, fish tacos and of course fried fish and other seafood. They also offer grilled options, sandwiches and more!

I was looking through some old photos and I found this from one of my in-person #cheeseboard classes over at @ossiningpubliclibrary back in November of 2018.

This was such a fun class, and I love that I'm able to offer similar classes virtually so people from all over are able to join from the comfort of their own kitchens.

Join me on Saturday, May 15th @ 4pm Eastern for my next virtual cheeseboard #class! I'll walk you through how to plan, shop for, and present your boards, and answer any questions you have along the way.

I'll also be sharing an easy, elegant #appetizer recipe (Garlicky Goat Cheese + Herb Stuffed Peppadews) to include with your spread.
