Members of your SavPhil's cello section have been busy this summer! ☀️😎

Ismail Akbar (Associate Principal Cello): For the past fifteen years, I have had the privilege of serving as a Cello Teaching Artist with the Atlanta Music Project. This summer, in celebration of the World Cup matches hosted in Atlanta, our ensemble launched a unique cultural initiative. We performed specialized repertoire representing the nations scheduled to compete on the pitch the following day. Our orchestra showcased works from Spain, Cape Verde, Haiti, and Morocco. To elevate this artistic exchange, distinguished composers and percussionists from these respective regions joined our students for intensive rehearsals and collaborative concert performances.

Katie Truex (Cello): As a private instructor, I am teaching summer lessons and participating as faculty for a summer string camp in July. As a performer, I have appearances with the Ridibund Chamber Music Society and the fabulous Josh Groban. My favorite non-cello activity is volunteering at a local wildlife rehabilitation center in their educational outreach program. I also take time in the summer to vacation and relax with my wonderful husband who is also a professional musician, and my cat, who fancies herself to be a professional music critic.
