RECOVERY IS TRAINING TOO. 🏈🧠

Dr. Mike takes our athletes through segmental mobility of the lumbar, thoracic, and cervical spine following a long week of football.

A football game places a tremendous amount of loading, compression, impact, and rotational stress on the body. Blocking, tackling, sprinting, changing direction and repeatedly hitting the ground can leave athletes feeling stiff and restricted, especially through the spine.

That’s why the day after competition shouldn’t always mean doing nothing.

Dr. Mike emphasizes light, controlled movement to help the body transition out of that high-stress environment. Segmental mobility encourages athletes to move through different regions of the spine with control instead of treating the back as one rigid unit.

For football players, restoring movement through the lumbar, thoracic and cervical regions can help reduce stiffness, maintain usable range of motion and prepare the body for the next week of practice and training.

Yesterday we LOADED.
Today we MOVE.
Tomorrow we BUILD again.

ANKLE MOBILITY = BETTER MOVEMENT

Dr. Mike breaking down both standing and kneeling closed-chain dorsiflexion warm-ups with our athletes.

For OL/DL, quality ankle dorsiflexion is huge. It allows the knee to travel forward while keeping the foot connected to the ground, helping athletes:

• Maintain better pad level
• Play with stronger knee bend and leverage
• Improve squat, stance, and change-of-direction positions
• Absorb and redirect force more efficiently
• Reduce compensation at the knees, hips, and lower back

We train the big movements, but we also address the small details that allow those movements to happen efficiently.

MOBILITY. STABILITY. PERFORMANCE. DURABILITY.

As students across Connecticut head back to school this week, Big Man Academy wants to wish ALL student-athletes a successful back-to-school week and an even better YEAR!

At BMA, we stress academic and behavioral excellence BEFORE success on the field. Being a student-athlete means handling your business everywhere.

1. Sit in the front of the classroom.
2. Take notes and stay engaged.
3. Ask for help when you need it.
4. Don’t speak while your teacher is teaching.
5. Keep your cell phone in your locker. Eliminate the distraction.
6. Stay away from students who have no goals. Your circle matters.

Remember, colleges can’t recruit you if your grades and character aren’t up to standard. Talent may get their attention, but your academics, behavior, work ethic, and character help determine where that talent can take you.

Make wise choices. Handle your business in the classroom. Then go dominate on the field.

Coach Gordon’s journey speaks for itself. A former Division I scholarship athlete and college graduate of the prestigious HBCU Delaware State University, he understands firsthand the discipline, accountability, sacrifice, and commitment required to succeed at a high level.

But what makes us most proud is the impact he has made since his own playing days. Over the past several years, Coach Gordon has been a true blessing and positive influence in the lives of countless young athletes, both young men and young ladies. His ability to teach, mentor, motivate, and genuinely pour into the next generation extends far beyond wins and losses.

We are extremely proud of you, Coach! This opportunity is well deserved, and there is no doubt in our minds that you will excel in this position. Our 12-year-old OL shows exactly what we’re looking for here, great pad level, proud chest, strong posture, elbows tight and inside, hands loaded and ready to punch.

High knees into controlled lateral slide steps, keeping his base underneath him and staying square throughout the movement.

At this age, we’re building the habits that will show up when the game speeds up.

The work starts BEFORE the work. 💪🏾

At Big Man Academy, our core warm-up isn’t just about breaking a sweat—it’s about building the foundation that great trench play is built on.

A strong core (including your glutes), mobile hips, and powerful stabilizer muscles allow linemen to:
✅ Produce more force
✅ Transfer power from the ground through the hands
✅ Maintain balance through contact
✅ Change direction more efficiently
✅ Stay in better body position
✅ Reduce the risk of injuries to the low back, hips, knees, and ankles

Your glutes are the engine that drive hip extension, acceleration, deceleration, and rotational power. When the glutes aren’t doing their job, other muscles have to compensate, and that’s where performance drops and injuries often begin.

We don’t skip the “little things” because the little things become the BIG things on Friday nights.
