Honored to share this wall with artists I’ve looked up to for years. Thank you, @beyondthestreetsart, @complex, and @linkinpark 🖤🖤🖤

Hip Hop and streetwear share a similar creative approach: foraging aka sampling. Hip Hop dug through records, sounds and vernacular, finding pieces that already existed and started chopping them up creating new masterpieces. Streetwear did the same thing visually/materially, pulling influences from workwear, sportswear, military, surf, skate, graffiti, luxury and whatever else was around us.

Sampling was never copying. It was about context, ingenuity and innovation. Take something familiar, move it somewhere unexpected, combine it with something else unexpected and give it new meaning. Hip Hop sampled music. Streetwear sampled culture. Both proved originality doesn’t always mean inventing the ingredients, for us it means creating a recipe nobody else thought to make.

Everything Hip Hop samples somehow becomes part of it.

What if we remembered how we got here so we could own our future together?

Skate had been leading the anti-establishment/rebellious vibes in the streets, cause that’s where you skate, for years. Depending where you were, the skate lifestyle mixed with others taking and sharing influences.

As these new companies that would become streetwear started emerging, they were learning from those that were already established, and skate had the shops that in my opinion helped shape what would become streetwear and sneaker stores. Note (we’ll get into this down the line): years later the influence from sneaker/streetwear culture sparked Nike SBs and other skate companies to make more lifestyle focused styles.

At the end of the day whether we’re talking Hip Hop, Streetwear or sneaker culture they are all intertwined inspired by and influencing one another. Steel sharpens steel.

Do you think the days of gatekeeping and collaboration could come alive again?

Big love was in full effect for our host with the most flavor that we all savor, my old homie, and one of my favorite artists and designers here on earth, Bill McMullen aka @billions or as i have affectionately called him since (Space)1999 “Byllis Diller”❤️🥰

It was wonderful to be out in the LES on a sweaty, August, Saturday night bursting with life on the streets, and to see so many people that i love, many i havent seen in a long time.
Special shout out to the super dope @blankmagbooks_nyc 17 Eldridge St for hosting such big energy in a small space!
