This week’s ‘8 Questions’ is with Mahi Binebine (@mahibinebine). Each week, we bring together the industry leaders and amazing creatives shaping fashion, arts, entertainment and hospitality, exploring the influences and personal tastes that shape their world.

A painter, sculptor and novelist, Binebine is known for stylised human figures caught in moments of tension, waiting and confinement, built up in layers of beeswax and natural pigment that give his surfaces a translucent, muted quality. His work explores exile, memory and the human condition, and is held in collections including the Guggenheim Museum, the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art and the Institut du monde arabe.

His solo exhibition Unbound, curated by Polly-Anna Monckton @pollyannamonckton of ACA Galleries @acagalleries, is now on view throughout @thetwentytwo, where it will remain beyond Frieze week. The exhibition coincides with the publication of Binebine’s fourteenth book, continuing a practice that has always moved between visual art and literature.

A haute couture house based in Marrakech 🌴

Her universe is:

The core of the style: the corset

Everything revolves around the structured corset. Whether it's an evening gown, a jumpsuit, or a blazer, there is always back lacing, bustier construction, cinched waist. Velvet, satin, sequins, gold embroidery, lace.

Moroccan slow fashion but global.
It’s a contemporary couture with Moroccan craftsmanship: embroidery, feather beading, brocade. She focuses a lot on detail before silhouette - close-ups on fabrics, boning, beads.

The vibes :
Red carpet glam, long slit gowns, open backs, olive satin, purple velvet, pink pleated halter gown - very "art of living", fireplace, villa, poolside.

Basically: if you like the mix of corset couture + discreet bling + very empowered femininity, but with the soul of Marrakech and not fast-fashion, that's 100% her world.
