Observing the Regeneration of LIFE on EARTH
~ Soil Microbe Farmer / Ecological Designer
~ Craft, Microbe Focused Inoculum Grade Compost

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Kyle Babcock calls Compost Academy his PhD program. He runs Biodiverse Designs in Bellingham, Washington, and over the last couple of years he’s built a business applying compost and compost extracts to landscapes around the Pacific Northwest.

One of those clients is the City of Seattle. They own four public golf courses, and a superintendent there wanted to run his more like a European organic course. Kyle supplies the compost, they apply the extracts, and the before and after on different holes tells the story. Biology is climbing and inputs are dropping.
His next project is a cider orchard working on drought resistant apples and the flavor of the terroir. Biology takes time, as Kyle says, but he loves the work and plans to do it for the rest of his life.

If you want to learn in the same way, our fall Soil Mentorship program starts TOMORROW, October 8th. Just comment “Soil” for the link.

For most people, a career in compost, soil biology, or land restoration does not unfold in a straight line. It is built through experimentation, persistence, changing direction, learning new skills, and slowly finding ways to turn those skills into meaningful work.

On August 11, we are bringing together three Compost Academy students whose paths into this field could not look more different.

Jody went from marine biology to winegrowing and began using biological composting to help reduce costs and improve production in her vineyard.

Kyle combined a lifelong love of the outdoors with horticulture, permaculture, composting, and soil consulting.

Danielle studied in the small pockets of time available while raising a young child, eventually stepping into a production role with a local composting nonprofit.

None of them followed a perfect roadmap. Each of them kept moving toward the work, built practical skills, found community, and created opportunities along the way.

Join us for the Soil Restoration Pathways Webinar to hear their stories, the challenges they faced, and what they are building now.

August 11 at 11:00 a.m. Pacific

Come hear what this path really looks like—and begin imagining what your own could become.

Here’s Kyle Babcock with @biodiversedesigns speaking about the importance of the WILD Workshop coming up in relation to all the wild fires we’re currently experiencing all over the PNW.
.
He’s one of the instructors and this is just a taste of the information that is going to be gained at this workshop.
.
If you have any desire to be part of solutions on regenerating land to protect from wild fires then you’re being called to participate in this workshop.
.
This time is now to start working together with the land.
.
The link for the workshop is in Empyrean Farms bio.
.
Sliding scale is offered and there’s scholarship opportunities to make the workshop accessible for everyone.

The land is asking us to pay attention. Flood, then drought — again and again, the ground forgetting how to hold what it’s given.

This August, come learn how to help it remember.

Over three days at Empyrean Farm, you’ll walk the land, read its contours, and design the swales and ponds that let water soak in instead of run off — guided by Brian Kerkvliet and Kyle Babcock, two teachers who’ve spent 30+ years partnering with the earth instead of fighting it. By the end, you won’t just understand water resilience — you’ll have built it, with your own hands, on real ground.

Camping and meals included. Only 15 spots, with sliding-scale pricing so this stays open to anyone called to do this work

Last Friday was so fun and special for us to host the first annual Feast Fest Fundraiser for the @foothills.food.bank ! It all came together perfectly and we look forward to working with everyone involved again the future. @paellaworks cooked up some amazing food with @north_fork_brewery serving up great beverages keeping the vibes high.
.
It was fun doing farm tours so that people got to experience connection to their community through the food we grow for the food bank and sharing the tour talk with @biodiversedesigns speaking on his expertise in soil biology was wonderful!
.
To share our farm with our community to build connection between each other and the land providing us with an abundance of food is overwhelming fulfilling. It feels like the circle completes itself and we look forward to sharing more experiences with you all.
.
Thank you dearly @bethany.clyne.photos for the incredible photos!! ❤️

Wonderful 3 days of deep diving and geeking with the extraordinary Dr Adrienne @photosynthesoil
Bringing soils to life through deep curiousity, truly a gift Adrienne has. Having such incredibly inspiring farmers, technicians and teachers in this space certainly made the time memorable.
My main a-ha?! My neglected stockpile of woodchip and horse manure that the chickens keep spreading around, is actuality pretty darn awesome biologically. Garden will be pleased for its addition come Spring.
We hope to do these kinds of events again next year, with some more practical composting and extracts to create.
Come to Montana!

Montana has mountains, big trucks, and for the past 3 days, a marvel of microscopists at our workshop, Magnify your Microbes!

Thank you to each of you, brilliant minds and hearts, brave to try some new techniques and teach one another.

And thank you to the delicious, local food from @foodworkslivingston --Eating regeneratively nourished our discussions about regenerating soils.
