I’m sharing this experience for raptor AWARENESS as well with hopes of cultivating response from fellow falconers, rehabbers and veterinarians. Also writing helps me focus and alleviate some stress as well as turn a negative experience into something positive.
This juvenile female red tail hawk was from the 2019 hatch. A wild take this past Labor Day weekend. Though she exhibited a bit of docile tendencies it was chalked up to her being freshly off the nest. Other than that she seemed overall healthy and strong.
Her demeanor was sweet and calm. Her mutes looked healthy but seemed too frequent.
I started noticing signs of heavy breathing after prolonged bating but it seemed normal for the amount of exertion. The following morning i found food she had ate the day prior, it was completely unprocessed and had been regurgitated, Immediate cause for concern I tried to get her to a veterinarian but with Labor Day weekend emergency medical care was unavailable to get her the help she needed. By the time I could get her to a vet on Tuesday it was to far onset she had a seizure in my arms and passed shortly after.
Diagnosis was ASPERGILLOSIS. Prognosis for this immunosuppression illness is poor but when we care, we do what we can. I kept her free of any added stress and tried to keep her hydrated with water and electrolytes. She had this before she came to me and would not have survived the winter though I believe she would have had a good shot at pulling through if medical attention had been available when I needed it. She was a tough young lady and fought it to the bitter end.
The potential for this with wild taken birds is moderate and I was aware of it but this was my first time dealing with it first hand. Also this was not an attempt to save a bird for the purpose of falconry it was an attempt to just SAVE her life, period. (Continued in comments)

It’s International Women’s Day. I would like to dedicate this post to all the female falconers who inspire me daily. The support and encouragement I receive from women in Falconry is incredible, we have an amazing community that I am proud to be a part of. In a sport dominated by men, we are smashing it. ❤️ #internationalwomensday

This is Jet, a peregrine falcon who lives at @islandraptors here in Cowichan. He’s just one of the wonderful birds you can visit there, including owls and eagles. Tag someone who you’d take to visit this fella! #TravelTuesday #ExploreCowichan 📸: @birdchaserbrys #falcon #jet #bird #explorebc #cowichanvalley #explorecanada #wildlife #westcoast
