People ask all the time what we’re using to catch these fish. Most of the time on our trips we’re using softplastics and surface lures, and you can guarantee at least one rod has a paddle tail. Paddle tails are so versatile, being able to cast them distances at active feeds or structure, casting them ahead of points and drop offs, or just dropping the straight down on a school of fish, they get bit. We could be running 30kts and if I mark some fish, the first thing I’ll throw down there is a paddle tail, and we find out quickly if those fish are hungry or not. Doesn’t really make a difference what brand you buy, we blow through them so fast that we’ve used just about every brand out there. Some of the best ones are the loose cheap ones at the checkout counter at the bait shop… If you’re fishing anywhere 40ft and deeper, it’s dark. Those fish are going off of shadows, contrast, motion, and vibration (with their lateral line) they can’t tell if it’s a $15 NLBN or a $2 home batch. Dialing down on your jig head size is much more important. Depending on our depth and current speed, we’re fishing anywhere from 2oz to 8oz jig heads. Once you figure out how to fish and read the jigs off the bottom properly you’re likely to never leave dock without a paddletail again.
