Meet Ben Harvey, one of our 2026 Westfield Local Hero finalists 💙

After experiencing a life-changing spinal injury as a teenager, Ben Harvey now inspires others through his advocacy for inclusion and accessibility. Through his work with Youngcare, Ben helps build a more inclusive community by ensuring young people with high physical support needs are treated with dignity and have the chance to gain control over their lives.

FAITH STORY🙏🏽

Yesterday I wanted to shoot some content at @southwestmetropirates in the morning before my main shoot for the QSL Youth League in the afternoon.

However, before I left home I saw a post of the inspirational bro @nahanly with a @youngcareoz tent set up at his old school Gregory Terrace sports fields at Tennyson.

I knew without contacting him he was fund raising for his upcoming charity challenge 'Ten Peaks Challenge'.

I've been trying to film Nick for several weeks now preparing his body for this challenge. However due to my workload I wasn't able to catch up for his early training sessions at Mt Cootha.

After seeing the post I felt that this was the perfect alternative as it was only 15 mins from my shoot at Mt Gravatt.

The goal was to get shots of Nick interacting with people talking about the Ten Peaks Challenge and his disability so I'm able to finish his mini-doco I'm doing for another charity @heartsinunion

I did not expect to interview one of my favourite Rugby League players of all time.

I wasn't expecting to film Nick on Saturday.

Nick wasn't expecting his mate Gordon Tallis to provide a testimonial for him.

However, God called me to those fields yesterday morning.

He always has a plan #godsplan

This morning, Business South Bank hosted a “You Can’t Ask That” panel inspired by the hit TV show You Can’t Ask That — with our very own Ben to be part of the conversation.

The session created a safe space for honest questions and open dialogue around topics often considered taboo, with Ben sharing candid insights about living with disability. It was an insightful morning filled with laughter, learning and meaningful connection.

Spot the wallabies!

Brisbane’s first-ever Australian British Rugby Lunch saw key figures from across the state and country come together to share in our love of Rugby Union and to support Hearts in Rugby Union! We were even lucky enough to host two former Wallaby captains on the HiRU table, Rod McCall and Tony Shaw!

Today’s line-up of exceptional guests and speakers provided plenty of laughs and a few incredible insights into the game we love. With the @britishandirishlions tour just around the corner, spirits were high!

A massive thank you to our partners @britishchamber and to everyone who attended today’s event. Funds raised will directly benefit the Hearts In Rugby Union mission - Help Rugby Help Its Own. A special shout out to our HiRU General Manager @tombsy15 who spoke wonderfully.

Outstanding Alumni Award | Announcing our 2024 winner of the Outstanding Alumnus of the Year Award: Timothy O’Shea (GT 2004). Tim is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Boston University and with a laboratory in his name, has garnered more than $2.4m in funding in the past three years to advance his work to develop improved outcomes for spinal cord injury patients. Devastated when his rugby union teammate and fellow Terracian, Ben Harvey (GT 2004) was injured in a pre-season club match accident during Year 11, Tim pivoted his career aspirations to focus on finding a way to help his mate. An inspiring story of friendship that has led to Tim advancing the progress in this field. Well done Tim, an extraordinary recipient of our Outstanding Alumnus Award for 2024!

In the latest episode of becomng, Ben opens up about the accident and how he was able to maintain an incredibly positive mindset throughout.

Ben now works passionately to advocate for greater disability representation in society and works with O’Shea Lab in Boston to treat brain and spinal cord disorders.

It was a treat catching up with my old mate Ben, his warm energy and incredible outlook will help you feel grateful for every little thing we take for granted in life.

Great day out for the @youngcareoz Budgie Bolt! It was a pleasure to team up again with the host with the most, MC extraordinaire @dallan.murphy to have a chat about the great work that Youngcare does for young people with disabilities.

Thank you to everyone who supported me in the lead up, I smashed my fundraising goal with a total of $1,330 in donations to my personal tally - contributing to over $28,000 and counting raised for the day!
