COMMA Session #4 - Exhibition Discomfort

To kick off this season's theme, we've invited 8 young artists to exhibit their work. Together we explore discomfort in all its forms — abjectness, cruelty, ugliness, dirt, grime, disease, non-conformity, folds, skin, wrinkles, warts, hair, soo much hair everywhere, pests, silences, uncouthness, clumsiness
You're invited to walk through the exhibition, think through the works, and engage with the artists. We set sail to the discomfort unknown.

What do the things we keep say about who we are? 💭

In HIDE, artist and designer Adele Zavagno explores how the objects and materials we keep, make and collect can carry memories and reveal something about our identity.

For the project, Zavagno worked closely with four participants from Enschede’s creative community. Personal materials and objects, some considered too precious to throw away, were cut, sewn, felted, taken apart and reassembled into wearable art.

The result is a wearable Wunderkammer: a collection of material memories brought together in a new form. Like a second skin, HIDE becomes an expression of identity, made up of textures, colours, shapes and objects that tell our stories without words.

Join us for the opening of HIDE on Sunday 4 October at Black Brick in Enschede.

Opening: 04.10.2026 - 16:00–20:00

Souvenir, 2020–2026 is a series of three automated theatre plays: Souvenir, Hierophant and Eidolon. Throughout the trilogy, the character Souvenir moves through a coming-of-age story that explores adolescence, belonging, memory and the ways in which understanding changes over time.

In these plays, animatronic figures, sound, lighting and moving images are coordinated through automated systems. This approach to theatre stems from a personal need to externalize, isolate and reflect on significant life events in a context that feels private and complete. What follows is a concatenation of gloomy epiphanies, portrayed by Souvenir through prose and various kinetic elements.

For the first time ever, the trilogy will be presented in full, marking the end of a six-year-long working period defined by morose introspection and an earnest attempt to find a way forward.

Over the past few months, I’ve been working on the preliminary research for How to Live with the Edge of Falling. The project continues a research branch I started with my graduation project Morphing Landscapes, looking at seismic activity as a natural phenomenon and at the different ways it can influence our lives. This time, I focus specifically on precarity - how it becomes a condition of life and can be embodied through sound in the development of a sonic installation that encourages audience intervention.

In this Open Work-in-Progress, I will share some discoveries from my theoretical and technological research, as well as the experiment I have been developing throughout the process.

The evening will start with a 20min show-and-tell, where I will introduce the research and the current state of the project. After that, I’ll continue staying with my work and be open to conversations and feedback. Feel free to drop by and talk to me! :)

Tuesday 29 September
20:00 - 21:00
at Black Brick, Enschede

The project is supported by the Creative Industries Kick-start Grant Scheme of the @stimuleringsfonds
