My new article with Caribbean Life News (@caribbeanlifenews ), under

The Harlem Art House Collective (HAHC) will be hosting its monthly cypher again this Friday, Aug. 28, at its headquarters, 74 West 120th Street, New York, NY 10027, from 7:30-10:30 p.m.

The organization was founded by Tyler Colón, who leads HAHC with the help and support of his mother, his father, and his siblings. Colón states that for him and his family, Jesus Christ has had the greatest influence on the path they’ve found themselves on today.

Artists participating in this month’s cypher are Chrissy R. from Queens (who also represents Brooklyn); and Nala Baby, Omar McCray, and Ni-Emah Bugg, who are all from the Bronx. Chrissy R., Nala Baby, and Ni-emah Bugg are all singers, while Omar McCray is a poet.

Karonmajigi wasn’t formed by accident — it was created in 2008 when the government moved persons with disabilities off the streets of Abuja and resettled them here temporarily, with the promise of relocation to a permanent site.

That promise was never fulfilled.

Sixteen years later, this “temporary” space has become home to an entire community navigating poor living conditions, unstable structures, and limited access to basic services. Yet, within these challenges lies deep resilience, leadership, and humanity that deserve to be seen.

Part 1 of The Forgotten Citizens takes you inside Karonmajigi — how it began, how people survive, and what it means to build a life in a place that was never meant to be permanent.

This is where the story starts.
This is the reality many Nigerians have never seen.

🌻Lowest center of gravity I've ever seen
"She fell so gracefully everytime"
♡ truly this girl had the lowest center of gravity I've ever seen in my life. no, genuinely. anytime over the course of our 20yr friendship, if she fell / stumbled / or tripped, I'd have to immediately ask quite perplexedly, "wait, did you just fall??" - even if I watched it happen right in front of me, I still had to ask, "okay wait, did you just fall?" and every time, without fail, we'd both laugh as she confirmed, "yes I just fell. it's my low center of gravity or something" literally. every single time.
With me long/slender + tall at 5"ft 5'in, a wopping 3ft of just limb and legs; she completed the bestie mold of 4"ft 9'in, squat, cute, and petite at nearly every turn, half her weight in t*ts, tone, and torso alone. hands and feet so small, heart and mind wide open. just like in the physical, it being hard to tell when she was falling, i too struggled recognizing the emotional turmoil she was in. with every wound / trauma / or energetic fissure, lie the loudest hope / gratitude / and external joy.
with every distrust + heartbreak lie an outer layer of heart + soul beating / leaping / screaming / roaring forth. for every tear shed at night, during those same days, lie the glimmering aftermath in the duality of feeling blinding optimism + clutching dispair ♡

🌻 Our last conversations...and our firsts too
"Love, Life, & Loss"
♡ as timidly as we spoke + shared about our rebirths or personal revelations, we almost never second-guessed our shared darkness or upheavingly emotional pain. we were proud of our tower moments, in times of which the hanged man led center staged. in each other's presence we acquiesced + evolved to much higher planes of consciousness and acceptance of our brightest powers + our darkest flaws. some of the deepest, most affirming conversations of ours took place in the service of love, life, and loss ♡
