We have a dream that Black graduate students will have equitable access to quality mental health care.

The adult Black community is 20% more likely to experience serious mental health problems, such as Major Depressive Disorder or Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

Only about 25% of African Americans seek mental health care compared to 40% of whites, in the general population (National Alliance on Mental Illness). One reason for this is that Black mental health professionals are difficult to find.

Only 2% of psychiatrists and 5.3% of psychologists are African American.

Thus, few providers have the personal experience or cultural sensitivity training to effectively help Black PhD students face the tokenism, microagressions, pioneerism, and marginalization that pervades academia.

If you or someone you know has struggled with mental health as a Black PhD student, you are not alone, and things will get better.

We will continue to advocate for more access, representation, and understanding for the Black PhD community.

We have tagged some accounts that may be helpful and will be sharing additional resources in our stories.

According to journalist Chris Arnold, “the reason debt forgiveness could have a big impact on the overall economy is that a generation of Americans is making major life decisions differently because of student loans.”

This weekend @repjohnlewis announced he has stage iv pancreatic cancer. Earlier this year @repalceefl announced he had the same condition. Our prayers go out to him.

Theses announcements serve as bleak reminders that African Americans are at an increased risk for the disease. Blacks have the highest incidence rate of pancreatic cancer of all ethnic/racial groups in the United States, up to 67 percent higher than any other group, according to the National Cancer Institute SEER data.

Born in 1940, @replewis is serving his 17th term representing Georgia’s fifth congressional district. He was chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating committee- one of the groups that organized the 1963 March on Washington. #tillmanempowerment #johnlewis #blacklivesmatter #healthdisparities #cancer #influencer
