a BIDEODROMO x Southeast Asia collaboration
Singapore’s only experimental film festival 🇸🇬

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Kicked things off for Gathering Ground yesterday with our Sub+ Youth Curators programme at @blankexff. Caught the mind-bending screening of the Student category which spotlighted emerging filmmakers from Southeast Asia and Spain, curated by our youth curators Cheng Hao and Phyllis together with Exyl.

Later in the afternoon Cheng Hao and Phyllis also moderated a panel, Mapping Experimental Filmmaking in Singapore, featuring filmmakers Daniel Hui, Chew Tze Chuan and Nelson Yeo. Fun conversations were had about the panelists’ take on the scene, where their journeys began and their inspirations, on collaboration and of the filmmaking community in Singapore.

It is without a doubt a huge undertaking to have created this much needed festival platforming experimental films in Southeast Asia, even more so independently, and we extend a huge congratulations to the festival director @thatfighterjet and the team for all the amazing work in making this festival happen. In some ways, this collaboration has been an homage to The Substation’s Experimental Film Forum days & we’re thankful for the opportunity to once again be able to support discourse on experimental filmmaking in Singapore.

⏭️ Our next Gathering Ground programme is a social mixer on 22 Sep @ In the Boonies featuring after party beats by @arms1 RSVP at substation.org to join us!

I first learned about the BIDEODROMO film festival through filmmaker Raey Ang @thatfighterjet . We met at FFIGS @ffigsffigsffigs last year when I was presenting the works from @firstshotsx . Raey and I, we spoke about experimental cinema, culture making and giving space to unconventional expressions and its challenges here.

Now, she is bringing that spirit to Singapore with the inaugural (blank) Experimental Film Festival, in partnership with BIDEODROMO @festival_mem from Spain.

I was also excited to discover familiar names behind the other programmes in (blank). Ivan Chin @lycancityfilms who curated EXHUMED, bringing long-lost films from the region back to the screen. EXYL @exyl_time who leads the STUDENT programme with @the_substation curators Phyllis Chan @yuzuwyd and Goh Cheng Hao @9ohchenghao, spotlighting the next generation of filmmakers.

As someone whose films are often passed around in strange and unconventional spaces, I’m very happy to support Raey and the festival team in envisioning a home for new experimental possibilities in Singapore.

Mark your calendars.

(blank) Experimental Film Festival (Singapore) - Call for entries for films made in Southeast Asia. Deadline June 30th

"(blank) Experimental Film Festival is kickstarting its inaugural first edition in Singapore. In collaboration with the BIDEODROMO Experimental Film Festival in Bilbao, Spain, the festival aims to provide a platform for experimental films in Southeast Asia, while establishing a meaningful bridge to the European experimental circuit, providing the artists opportunities in two markets. The festival will champion a programme of the unconventional and avant garde, led by festival director Raey Ang. It will be a three-day festival with 3 categories: Main, Student and "Exhumed". "Exhumed" will subvert the traditional ask for films from the last two years that most festivals do, and program films that have been made in the region that are older than 5 years but have never been seen before.

As part of the collaboration, part of the Main program will screen at the BIDEODROMO Experimental Film Festival, and part of the Student program will screen at the University of Basque County this year. For "Exhumed", selected work will be screened as part of the collaboration at the Guggenheim (Bilbao) later this year as well.

By having this festival, we hope fans of experimental cinema who have been craving to watch more will answer the call, as well as new audiences who are able to come and find out for themselves what experimental film is for themselves.

Looking for:
- films made in Southeast Asia
- less than 30 minutes
- animation/live-action both welcome

No entry fees. All are welcome. Deadline is 30th June 2026."
