9 + 0 = 9
8 + 1 = 9
7 + 2 = 9
6 + 3 = 9
3 × 3 = 9
18 ÷ 2 = 9
12 − 3 = 9
27 ÷ 3 = 9

Eight different ways. One correct answer.

Now apply that same concept to leadership.

One of the biggest mistakes a leader can make is believing that their way is the only right way. Just because you’ve done something a certain way for 20 years doesn’t mean someone else can’t accomplish the same objective using a different approach.

Experience is valuable. Tradition has its place. Standards are necessary. But none of those should prevent us from listening, learning, and recognizing that there may be another way to get the job done.

𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦. 𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐭.

If someone can accomplish the same objective safely, effectively, and within established standards, why should it matter if their approach looks different from yours?

As leaders, we should be developing independent thinkers, not creating carbon copies of ourselves. We should encourage questions, welcome ideas, and give people the opportunity to solve problems without constantly looking over their shoulders.

That doesn’t mean lowering expectations or compromising safety. It means understanding the difference between maintaining a standard and controlling every step of the process.

𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 “𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐈 𝐝𝐨 𝐢𝐭” 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 “𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐢𝐭.”

Sometimes the best thing a leader can do is step aside, watch someone else work, and realize there’s something new to learn.

Different methods. Same positive outcome.

That’s not a failure of leadership. That’s what good leadership should produce.

What do people say about you when you’re not in the room?On this episode, Nick explores the connection between reputation, consistency, character, and performance. Your reputation isn’t built by your title or what you say about yourself; it’s built through the actions you take every day. We break down what it means to be known for leadership, preparation, accountability, adaptability, and being someone others can count on when it matters most.
The question is simple: What are you known for—and is itwhat you want to be known for?

Winning an election doesn’t automatically make you a leader. Being well liked, sharing a few beers, and getting along with everyone are great qualities, but they won’t make the tough decisions for you when things go sideways. If you’re going to accept the responsibility of leading firefighters, you owe it to them to keep improving. Read a book, attend a class, listen to a podcast, study tactics, or learn from those around you. Whatever it is, never stop learning. Nobody expects you to know everything, but your firefighters deserve someone who’s willing to put in the work. Be a good person, be approachable, and enjoy the brotherhood, but remember, popularity might win you an election, preparation earns you the right to lead.

The firefighter mindset goes beyond the fireground. It’s about thinking ahead, staying composed under pressure, looking out for your crew, and constantly pushing yourself to improve. These traits aren’t developed overnight. They’re built through training, experience, discipline, and dedication. Nobody is perfect, but there’s always room to be better than you were yesterday.

The standard you set for yourself matters.

Just because you’re driving the truck doesn’t mean your responsibilities begin and end at the turntable.

The truck company chauffeur plays a critical role in fireground operations. Proper apparatus positioning, setting up the aerial, and ensuring the equipment is ready for use are all priorities. But once those responsibilities are addressed, what’s next?

Depending on staffing, apparatus capabilities, and fireground conditions, the chauffeur may be in a position to assist with additional outside truck company functions.

Throwing ground ladders, assisting with exterior ventilation when coordinated with fire attack, improving access and egress, or helping establish a secondary means of escape are all tasks that can make a difference.

The key is understanding your assignment and knowing when you’re needed at the apparatus. If the aerial is operating or conditions require someone at the controls, that’s where you belong. But when the situation allows, don’t overlook opportunities to contribute.

A good truck company chauffeur knows their apparatus. A great one also understands the bigger picture of the fireground.

Train your chauffeurs to be more than just drivers. Teach them apparatus placement, building access, laddering priorities, and how their actions support the overall operation.

Don’t just drive the truck. Be part of the truck company. #raisethestandard

On this episode, Nick discusses the importance of resetting and why recovery is essential for long-term success. In a profession that demands constant readiness, it’s easy to stay in “go mode” and neglect the physical, mental, and emotional recovery needed to perform at your best. Nick explores how taking time to reset improves leadership, situational awareness, fitness for duty, adaptability, and overall fireground performance. Learn why resetting isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a strategy for sustaining excellence and showing up ready for whatever comes next. #5toolfirefighter #resetting #fireservicewarrior #fhtribune
