POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I had a great time yesterday meeting @bleakhousing at @bobzbay and getting my ARC of The Ship of Death signed (and my preordered copy)! I'm very much an introvert so I was nervous to be a weirdo but Kyle was so kind.

I'm sad to miss Hops & Horrors today but I got a couple more books to hold me over until The Substitute Teacher comes out next year so it was a big win!

It was a very fruitful weekend for my bookshelves. Swipe to see what I'm adding to my library lol

💭: What book do you want to add to you shelves next?

I don't have many signed books so I'm super excited to add these to my shelf!!

My bestie gave me this stunning copy of Mistletoe All the Way for my birthday! I love a sprayed edge and I can't wait for Holiday romance season.

One of my siblings gave me both Hooked and Butter for my birthday. They've both been on my wishlist for years.

My husband and I did a little anniversary shopping on Friday evening. We picked out a cologne for him and took advantage of buy 1 get 1 half off at Target and picked up all of the Strange series books so far as well as a copy of First and Forever. I think that's the only @lynnpainterbooks book that I didn't have on my shelf yet!

Over the last month I’ve read two books by Kyle Winkler—THE SHIP OF DEATH and GRASSHANDS—both of which occupy a unique space within horror fiction.
From a sinister board game to a moss that transfers knowledge of the books it grows on, these stories do something only fiction can do: slip inside your psyche and mess with the wiring.

Winkler’s writing weaves a dark and unsettling spell. Maybe the word “hallucinatory” gets thrown around all willy nilly, but it’s books like these the term was made for.

🎲 Horror Movie meets the Blair Witch Project in this supernatural chokehold of a book told entirely through found documents, the cursed story of an unwitting couple ensnared by a mysterious tabletop roleplaying game, who are commanded, as the game's intentions become clearer, to do the unthinkable.

✨ This is one of Liz's top books of the year, and even if you don't know much about tabletop games you will enjoy this book - it is a trip and a half and I was IMMERSED in this story.

✨Told entirely through game reports, emails, game forum posts, personal journals, and police reports, reading THE SHIP OF DEATH feels like a dangerous dice roll.

💖"Mind f*cking melting." - Benjamin Percy

💖"Cosmically creepy as hell. A nightmarish experience." - Dan Chaon

💖"Every turn of the page is a creepy as f*ck critical success D20 roll. Winkler warmed my nerd heart while draining its blood." - Sequoia Nagamatsu

Just finished the ALC for The Ship of Death by @bleakhousing

A huge thank you to @netgalley and @harpercollinsca for the chance to listen to this early.

I LOVED THIS AUDIOBOOK.
Early on , all the voice actors engross you within the story. This is written via a combination of reports and recordings giving you different perspectives across the storyline which I loved .
Both this writing style and the descriptions and everything comes together to make this very easy to visualize
Some early chapters can feel a bit of slow burn BUT
Descends into a wild disturbing ride you cannot stop listening to

A lovely Saturday afternoon chatting with Kyle Winkler (@bleakhousing) about his new horror release, “The Ship of Death,” a cosmic horror epistolary novel about a maddening tabletop roleplaying game.

We’ve still got some signed copies left of this and some other titles from Kyle’s backlist, so now is the perfect time to dive into his bibliography which is full of horror and dark fantasy bangers 💀🎲

BOOK HAUL

Ever since moving rurally I’ve MISSED dearly the variety of local bookshops the city has to offer 😩🤍 there’s just nothing quite like walking into a small shop FILLED with books on a cold October day, warm drink in hand, and just knowing you’re gonna find everything you need AND MORE (all the while supporting a local small business 🫶🏻)

Also, spooky season also means a whole slew of horror authors release some absolute HEATERS of the literary kind, and while my soul and brain loves it, my wallet on the other hand 🫩 tired.

That being said! Feel your soul today and go support a local business 🤍 or visit your local library and find some spooky reads 🕸️

THE SHIP OF DEATH | KYLE WINKLER

This book and I started off on the right foot; horror, found-footage/epistolary format, and TTRPGs are three of my favorite things, making this bite sized (just over 250 page!) novel an absolute delight to read.

immersive, and extremely nerdy (which made my heart sing.) The dark, descriptive, and grimey world of Mishilect was fun to see mixed in with the mundanity of working shift work and a too small apartment that encapsulated Cole and Lorraine’s current point in their lives. As someone who has consumed a lot of books written in the epistolary format I feel as for it to be as immersive as possible you REALLY need to send it. As some other readers experienced (as well as myself) at some points during the journal entries and after game reports, it did just feel like I was reading in the normal/usual format of a book rather than found correspondence.

However, the tension and interesting world of Mishilect was enough to keep me intrigued. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes their horror on the cosmic side.

We’re very excited to welcome author of the strange and singular, Kyle Winkler, to Evening House this Saturday! Kyle’s latest novel, “The Ship of Death” is a really exciting found document cosmic horror novel that has horror fans and writers alike thrilled.

“Unsettling and formally audacious. . . Winkler manages to generate a potent sense of otherworldly dread. For readers who relish cosmic horror and TTRPG culture, this daring experiment makes play feel perilously consequential.” - Publishers Weekly

Come join us this Saturday, October 17 at 4PM, to meet Kyle, get your book signed and get yourself more great horror reads for the Halloween season. See you then!
