It’s noticing the ‘small beauties’..the quieter voices that you really need to listen to…. It’s the practice of observing through the seasons.
.
I’m documenting local botanicals through coffee stained cyanotypes…..hoping it will become a larger body of work for exhibiting.
.
A type of Newhaven Herbarium if you like….
.
The plants are foraged for Gelli plate classes, then pressed for cyanotype classes, so have become a rather huge beautiful bi product with a new purpose.
.
I read this, loved it and agree…”a weed is not a type of plant, it’s a role. A plant becomes a weed the moment a human decides it’s not where it is supposed to be “
.
Here’s to all the wild stuff growing wherever it wants to grow 👏🏻👏🏻❤️

Two cyanotype classes are running this month on Thursday 22nd evening 6pm -9pm and Friday 30th 10am -4.30pm with myself and Cass…if you fancy giving it a go yourself.

NOVEMBER bookbinding @theheartofnewhaven is dedicated to my new favourite technique - no sew tab binding...

My personal challenge to teach a different book structure each month @theheartofnewhaven, has seen me share a wide range of techniques, from French link stich and Coptic to Japanese stab binding and lots in between, all involving a needle and thread!

For November I'm going rogue and sharing this fun book structure that involves no stitching - it works by attatching pages together with a series of card tabs.

There's lots of opportunity to personalise this one and incorporate different upcycled and hand decorated papers into the cover, tabs and inside pages.

➡️ Screen Print Tab Binding | 6-9pm, Thursday 12 & 19 November | £130

I’m teaming up with Lorna @inkonmesh for this 2 part evening workshop. Lorna will lead the first session – an opportunity to get to grips with screen printing and create a selection of colourful layered prints onto different papers and mount board. Then join me the following week to transform your prints into a set of eye catching, hard cover, no-stitch tab books.

➡️ Tab Binding Day Class | 10.30am-4.30pm, Monday 23 November | £100

Join me for a creative day exploring the potential of tab binding with upcycled materials. Together we’ll make a collection of different sized books using decorative paper and remnant fabric tabs to bind the pages together. We'll also explore how to collage into our books and onto the cover to create something really personal to you.

GELLI PLATE PRINTMAKING MONTH.
.
As we move towards the more Autumnal months why not give yourself some creative time to play, experiment and learn about new materials and processes. We’ve got Gelli plate printmaking this month for complete beginners. You might enjoy the introduction afternoon next week or combine this fascinating process with bookmaking at the end of the month.
.
There’s a few spots left on the Abstract Landscape weekend with Annette Bruton. You’ll be exploring the shoreline between land & sea with Gelli plate printmaking on cloth…followed by cutting, layering, assembling other sheer fabrics together with stitching and embroidery…a really beautiful tactile weekend filled with textile techniques, expertly guided by practitioner Annette @annettebrutonart
.
Lots of different ways to explore one process…learn how to continue working on this at home and in your own time afterwards.

• Did you know •
.
You can get training to work independently at the studio. You can book sessions on your own or with as much tech support as you need.
.
This what 6 x 3-4hr sessions looks like and what @karenfiddler.shed_art produced during her time.
Karen is starting her final year at ECA @ecatextilesdepartment soon and was keen to build her confidence with a few ideas she had and to test some techniques & processes before the term starts.
.
It’s been a joy to see the work developing over the weeks and hear how much she’s got from being in the studio. Working independently has always been part of my business vision for IoM…it’s not going to be for everyone…but for those who are ready, willing and able I’m delighted to offer that opportunity.
.
Go Karen!!!.. can’t wait to see what the coming year holds for you.☺️#inkonmeshedinburgh

This time three years ago we trialled a screen print & sew class with these two great women, Sam & Natalie.
From the pics you can see we had a lot of fun 🤩 but the modular garment was much more complicated than we first planned, it took longer than the weekend time limit too v’s costs and so we never really got it off the ground as a viable class.
.
Not everything works out but the screen prints & designed garments were pretty cool and we thoroughly enjoyed our experimental weekend….

•Connecting Communities•
.
First proper day back to thinking about work and what better way than a trip through West to visit print pals at Glasgow’s Community Textile Print Studio.
@printclan
.
It was a really interesting and informative morning discussing the pro’s/con’s, ins & outs, conundrums and endless outcomes and information around developing printing inks from natural dyes & extracts.
.
Some of us attending have been tentatively dipping our toes in this huge trending topic, some had expert knowledge of dyes and others of plants and botanicals with natural colour lore . Together it made for a lively, passionate and super helpful gathering.
.
Arianna, who runs the show along with Rachel generously shared their experience, hands on knowledge and recipes to help simplify and demystify the ink making process and I’ve been longing for something like this after doing several in person & online courses ….there really is nothing better than being in a room with fellow textile artist who want to make things simple, accessible and create a connected community that isn’t competitive or gatekeepers of knowledge.
@arianna_mele

.
Thanks a million for this morning and great meet @bettysbeautifullife there too….
Looking forward to sharing more soon …..
.
Check out Printclan’s website for classes, courses, access and community projects all over Glasgow.

When I’m heading on holiday I always pack a little stash of cyanotype papers/fabrics to take. It’s a great travel print process and so accessible wherever you go.
.
We used some pots & baking trays to wash our prints and I found a tempered glass table top to press our plants tight to the papers/fabrics. Our Villa in Javea, Spain had gorgeous bougainvillea, jasmine, cycad palms and lots of other botanicals to use.
.
The UV abroad was very high so our prints were exposed in only a few minutes which was so much quicker than in the studio using UV bulbs. It was all pretty makeshift but still the results were so interesting and surprising as ever….we sprinkled water on some and timed double exposures and moved plants during the exposure too so we had a lot of fun with it.
.
I’ll be teaching this print process as an evening class in the new term starting in September at @inkonmesh @theheartofnewhaven so checkout the website program…. You’ll find it addictive and as well as being fun it can be very technical and used in many different ways to express your ideas, themes, visual language.

Gotta admit that was a belter of a weekend with Katie and Karen at IoM’s last textile class of this term.
I feel I can speak on behalf of us all and say we were totally buzzing.!
•Reclaiming screens
• preparing artworks for screen
•Exposing screens
• Mixing ink colours
• Cut paper stencils
•Registration tips
• Blends & ombre
•Mono screen print•
•Layout & composition
• Metallic foiling
……I recon they covered it all and with so much enthusiasm and creativity…it was a pleasure seeing their ideas develop and enable them to try new things or consider experimenting in ways they hadn’t thought about before. The chat was in full flow most of the time too as was the laughter…multi tasking queens 🫅
.
Huge thanks to you both for what didn’t feel at all like a ‘working weekend’

We were all feeling really good at the end of our print and book bind day yesterday @inkonmesh .
What a wonderful group of participants, many returners and a few nubies to screen print too.
Wowzer you never see the same results twice from any of these collaborations that we run….always delighted to see the results of the mornings print session coming together so beautifully in these fabulous, usable books.
Last one this term but I’m certain it’ll be programmed again for Autumn term if you missed out and fancy it.
.
One last collab with @bookbindingwithcass before summer.
