Graduation from @edinburghcollegeofart sometime in the past alongside @lisaarnottjeweller @tracymcaus @scottlawriegallery_
.
A degree and post grad in Printed Textiles from ECA has translated to a lifetime (so far) of creative employment in the design and art industry, commissions and wonderful collaborations, it’s been years of teaching and facilitation of textiles, design & print education across many sectors and hundreds of individuals. It’s also given me my creative practice and purpose, several businesses including @inkonmesh alongside my dearest life long friendships….and more that i cant find words for..
.
Some of those friends are employees of ECA courses that have been axed including Printed Textiles , Jewelery and Performance Costume… despite promises from Edinburgh Uni management, in 3-4 years there jobs most probably will not exist.
.
I’ve friends with children now at ECA, graduate students from Edinburgh College now at ECA …they will be the last of the textile designers, jewellers, costume graduates!….what about anyone who dreamt of joining these industries in their future.
.
We know as fact that these courses are actually over subscribed year on year, that the Uni has made no provision to provide more space or staff to grow these courses. They are suggesting that these courses can be electives ..in other words a short taster during a mixed degree program. But it’s a 4 year degree because it needs to be taught in depth & breadth, they are highly skilled, labour intensive technically expert processes, richly historical and highly valuable in a future threatened by AI.
.
We were part of huge protests in the early 90’s against cuts in education and the poll tax and some of the ‘people power’ protests did influence change and it’s heart felt to see students, staff, alumni out on the streets and outside Parliament this week shouting about the disgrace that Edinburgh Uni is! There has to be a belief that ‘people power’ can overturn this decision.

It’s noticing the ‘small beauties’..the quieter voices that you really need to listen to…. It’s the practice of observing through the seasons.
.
I’m documenting local botanicals through coffee stained cyanotypes…..hoping it will become a larger body of work for exhibiting.
.
A type of Newhaven Herbarium if you like….
.
The plants are foraged for Gelli plate classes, then pressed for cyanotype classes, so have become a rather huge beautiful bi product with a new purpose.
.
I read this, loved it and agree…”a weed is not a type of plant, it’s a role. A plant becomes a weed the moment a human decides it’s not where it is supposed to be “
.

GELLI PLATE PRINTMAKING MONTH.
.
As we move towards the more Autumnal months why not give yourself some creative time to play, experiment and learn about new materials and processes. We’ve got Gelli plate printmaking this month for complete beginners. You might enjoy the introduction afternoon next week or combine this fascinating process with bookmaking at the end of the month.
.
There’s a few spots left on the Abstract Landscape weekend with Annette Bruton. You’ll be exploring the shoreline between land & sea with Gelli plate printmaking on cloth…followed by cutting, layering, assembling other sheer fabrics together with stitching and embroidery…a really beautiful tactile weekend filled with textile techniques, expertly guided by practitioner Annette @annettebrutonart

Lots of different ways to explore one process…learn how to continue working on this at home and in your own time afterwards.

This time three years ago we trialled a screen print & sew class with these two great women, Sam & Natalie.
From the pics you can see we had a lot of fun 🤩 but the modular garment was much more complicated than we first planned, it took longer than the weekend time limit too v’s costs and so we never really got it off the ground as a viable class.
.
Not everything works out but the screen prints & designed garments were pretty cool and we thoroughly enjoyed our experimental weekend….

First proper day back to thinking about work and what better way than a trip through West to visit print pals at Glasgow’s Community Textile Print Studio.

It was a really interesting and informative morning discussing the pro’s/con’s, ins & outs, conundrums and endless outcomes and information around developing printing inks from natural dyes & extracts.
.
Some of us attending have been tentatively dipping our toes in this huge trending topic, some had expert knowledge of dyes and others of plants and botanicals with natural colour lore . Together it made for a lively, passionate and super helpful gathering.
.
Arianna, who runs the show along with Rachel generously shared their experience, hands on knowledge and recipes to help simplify and demystify the ink making process and I’ve been longing for something like this after doing several in person & online courses ….there really is nothing better than being in a room with fellow textile artist who want to make things simple, accessible and create a connected community that isn’t competitive or gatekeepers of knowledge.

Taking some well needed rest time away with family & friends but IoM studio is still open with @abi_bluecatclothing running her 6wk dressmaking classes and a brilliant 1 day sewing techniques class today where participants make a folder of sewing samples covering seams/darts/facings/zips/pockets/pleats….everything you need to know about making your own clothes.👌🏻
.
There is a second techniques day on Saturday 8th August if you’re interested in joining Abi for that.

We’ve various independent artists working at IoM through the summer too, making use of the space & printmaking equipment, and many of the next term classes are up on the website too but I need to get round to updating the website and scheduling some NEW classes there…….. but for now some serious sun baking ☀️🕶️ by @blessed_unrest2015

Gotta admit that was a belter of a weekend with Katie and Karen at IoM’s last textile class of this term.
I feel I can speak on behalf of us all and say we were totally buzzing.!
•Reclaiming screens
• preparing artworks for screen
•Exposing screens
• Mixing ink colours
• Cut paper stencils
•Registration tips
• Blends & ombre
•Mono screen print•
•Layout & composition
• Metallic foiling
……I recon they covered it all and with so much enthusiasm and creativity…it was a pleasure seeing their ideas develop and enable them to try new things or consider experimenting in ways they hadn’t thought about before. The chat was in full flow most of the time too as was the laughter…multi tasking queens 🫅

Huge thanks to you both for what didn’t feel at all like a ‘working weekend’
