It’s a whole day 10 - 4.30pm at IoM Studio in The Heart of Newhaven.

It’s noticing the ‘small beauties’..the quieter voices that you really need to listen to…. It’s the practice of observing through the seasons.
.
I’m documenting local botanicals through coffee stained cyanotypes…..hoping it will become a larger body of work for exhibiting.
.
A type of Newhaven Herbarium if you like….
.
The plants are foraged for Gelli plate classes, then pressed for cyanotype classes, so have become a rather huge beautiful bi product with a new purpose.
.
I read this, loved it and agree…”a weed is not a type of plant, it’s a role. A plant becomes a weed the moment a human decides it’s not where it is supposed to be “
.

A no camera photographic process that requires sun light☀️ or Ultraviolet light bulbs to expose the impression of objects, photo transparencies, paper cut outs and botanicals onto paper…always in this glorious cyan blue colour.

Graduation from @edinburghcollegeofart sometime in the past alongside @lisaarnottjeweller @tracymcaus @scottlawriegallery_
.
A degree and post grad in Printed Textiles from ECA has translated to a lifetime (so far) of creative employment in the design and art industry, commissions and wonderful collaborations, it’s been years of teaching and facilitation of textiles, design & print education across many sectors and hundreds of individuals. It’s also given me my creative practice and purpose, several businesses including @inkonmesh alongside my dearest life long friendships….and more that i cant find words for..
.
Some of those friends are employees of ECA courses that have been axed including Printed Textiles , Jewelery and Performance Costume… despite promises from Edinburgh Uni management, in 3-4 years there jobs most probably will not exist.
.
I’ve friends with children now at ECA, graduate students from Edinburgh College now at ECA …they will be the last of the textile designers, jewellers, costume graduates!….what about anyone who dreamt of joining these industries in their future.
.
We know as fact that these courses are actually over subscribed year on year, that the Uni has made no provision to provide more space or staff to grow these courses. They are suggesting that these courses can be electives ..in other words a short taster during a mixed degree program. But it’s a 4 year degree because it needs to be taught in depth & breadth, they are highly skilled, labour intensive technically expert processes, richly historical and highly valuable in a future threatened by AI.
.
We were part of huge protests in the early 90’s against cuts in education and the poll tax and some of the ‘people power’ protests did influence change and it’s heart felt to see students, staff, alumni out on the streets and outside Parliament this week shouting about the disgrace that Edinburgh Uni is! There has to be a belief that ‘people power’ can overturn this decision.

Our weekend textile course was all about pattern, texture, layers and colour in landscape. More of an abstract suggestion and atmosphere rather than anything photorealistic. Annette developed the weekend course idea from her own practice and shared generously her techniques, process and insights throughout the two days.
.
You’ll see from the images that Mary, Rebeka, Gillian, Ruth and Jane made these amazing textile artwork using markmaking techniques on cloth using the Gelli plate, they layered and collaged with sheer fabrics to create depth, playing with composition and hand stitching details into the final piece.
.
I dropped in several times and really felt quite envious of them all working away with the tunes on, the chat flowing , the wonderful materials to work with and Annette’s brilliant guidance and enthusiasm.
.
Thank you so much Annette and all the participants it really was wonderful.

GELLI PLATE PRINTMAKING MONTH.
.
As we move towards the more Autumnal months why not give yourself some creative time to play, experiment and learn about new materials and processes. We’ve got Gelli plate printmaking this month for complete beginners. You might enjoy the introduction afternoon next week or combine this fascinating process with bookmaking at the end of the month.

There’s a few spots left on the Abstract Landscape weekend with Annette Bruton. You’ll be exploring the shoreline between land & sea with Gelli plate printmaking on cloth…followed by cutting, layering, assembling other sheer fabrics together with stitching and embroidery…a really beautiful tactile weekend filled with textile techniques, expertly guided by practitioner Annette @annettebrutonart

You can get training to work independently at the studio. You can book sessions on your own or with as much tech support as you need.
.
This what 6 x 3-4hr sessions looks like and what @karenfiddler.shed_art produced during her time.
Karen is starting her final year at ECA @ecatextilesdepartment soon and was keen to build her confidence with a few ideas she had and to test some techniques & processes before the term starts.
.
It’s been a joy to see the work developing over the weeks and hear how much she’s got from being in the studio. Working independently has always been part of my business vision for IoM…it’s not going to be for everyone…but for those who are ready, willing and able I’m delighted to offer that opportunity.
