Graduation from @edinburghcollegeofart sometime in the past alongside @lisaarnottjeweller @tracymcaus @scottlawriegallery_

A degree and post grad in Printed Textiles from ECA has translated to a lifetime (so far) of creative employment in the design and art industry, commissions and wonderful collaborations, it’s been years of teaching and facilitation of textiles, design & print education across many sectors and hundreds of individuals. It’s also given me my creative practice and purpose, several businesses including @inkonmesh alongside my dearest life long friendships….and more that i cant find words for..
.
Some of those friends are employees of ECA courses that have been axed including Printed Textiles , Jewelery and Performance Costume… despite promises from Edinburgh Uni management, in 3-4 years there jobs most probably will not exist.
.
I’ve friends with children now at ECA, graduate students from Edinburgh College now at ECA …they will be the last of the textile designers, jewellers, costume graduates!….what about anyone who dreamt of joining these industries in their future.
.
We know as fact that these courses are actually over subscribed year on year, that the Uni has made no provision to provide more space or staff to grow these courses. They are suggesting that these courses can be electives ..in other words a short taster during a mixed degree program. But it’s a 4 year degree because it needs to be taught in depth & breadth, they are highly skilled, labour intensive technically expert processes, richly historical and highly valuable in a future threatened by AI.

We were part of huge protests in the early 90’s against cuts in education and the poll tax and some of the ‘people power’ protests did influence change and it’s heart felt to see students, staff, alumni out on the streets and outside Parliament this week shouting about the disgrace that Edinburgh Uni is! There has to be a belief that ‘people power’ can overturn this decision.

Spent the day at a sundrenched @inkonmesh whitnessing folk create the most beautiful collection of botanical gelli prints, under the guidance of the lovely Lorna, then helping two participants transform them into accordion spine books.

Magic to see 2D prints become 3D books and spend some time cutting, folding and stitching in good company!

NOVEMBER bookbinding @theheartofnewhaven is dedicated to my new favourite technique - no sew tab binding...

My personal challenge to teach a different book structure each month @theheartofnewhaven, has seen me share a wide range of techniques, from French link stich and Coptic to Japanese stab binding and lots in between, all involving a needle and thread!

For November I'm going rogue and sharing this fun book structure that involves no stitching - it works by attatching pages together with a series of card tabs.

There's lots of opportunity to personalise this one and incorporate different upcycled and hand decorated papers into the cover, tabs and inside pages.

I’m teaming up with Lorna @inkonmesh for this 2 part evening workshop. Lorna will lead the first session – an opportunity to get to grips with screen printing and create a selection of colourful layered prints onto different papers and mount board. Then join me the following week to transform your prints into a set of eye catching, hard cover, no-stitch tab books.

Join me for a creative day exploring the potential of tab binding with upcycled materials. Together we’ll make a collection of different sized books using decorative paper and remnant fabric tabs to bind the pages together. We'll also explore how to collage into our books and onto the cover to create something really personal to you.

Taking some well needed rest time away with family & friends but IoM studio is still open with @abi_bluecatclothing running her 6wk dressmaking classes and a brilliant 1 day sewing techniques class today where participants make a folder of sewing samples covering seams/darts/facings/zips/pockets/pleats….everything you need to know about making your own clothes.👌🏻

There is a second techniques day on Saturday 8th August if you’re interested in joining Abi for that.

We’ve various independent artists working at IoM through the summer too, making use of the space & printmaking equipment, and many of the next term classes are up on the website too but I need to get round to updating the website and scheduling some NEW classes there…….. but for now some serious sun baking ☀️🕶️

Swipe for books ➡️ 📖

Loved seeing these colourful piles of screen printed papers and leather transform into beautiful books @inkonmesh yesterday!!

My last collab of the summer term with the lovely Lorna @blessed_unrest2015 and a great one to end on 👌🏻

Watching blank pieces of paper, maps, old book pages, envelopes and sheet music, become colourful works of art, then shift from 2D to 3D as they take on book form, with some mindful folding and stitching, is just magic!

Each person followed the same guidance from myself and Lorna but created their own completely unique book, each one featuring a different colour pallette and set of imagery that evoked a different feel from the next.

Great to hear that the participants were eager to learn more and plan to investigate screen printing & bookbinding further ✔️ job done 🙌

Really looking forward to our Autumn/Winter term of collaborative print & bookbinding classes, which will include a two part evening class for the first time. Details coming soon!

The Blink of an Eye - my screenprints and artist’s books in a group exhibition to mark 30 years since graduating from Edinburgh College of Art. Six friends, still creating. On until 29 June in the Art & Design Library, Central Library, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh. Screenprints created at @inkonmesh studio with the excellent support of Lorna. From attending Ink on Mesh introductory screenprinting workshops to weekend workshops, progressing to one-to-one supported sessions and independent sessions, I became hooked on screenprinting and thoroughly recommend @inkonmesh

•Studio Days•

It’s a busy day ahead in the IoM Studio….
Been in early to prep screens. I’ve the lovely Gillian arriving at 9 for her four hour print access session. I’ll be there for support but also alongside I’ll finishing a lampshade commission then preparing papers and cloth for Mondays Cyanotypes & Bookbinding class with Cass.

The afternoon looks like some admin and preparing screens for another artist based up the hill at @eswsculpture . I’ve an open day on the 20th June here with Annette and the History of Education celebrating James Hutton (father of modern geology) so I’m gonna start developing artwork/images for screens this afternoon. We’re running free print workshops on paper and textiles on the open day so pop in and make your mark across our community banner or print your own geology inspired poster to take home.
