SAVCON DELIVERS

Savcon’s completion of the mass timber works at Mount Alvernia College marks the close of one of Queensland’s most technically demanding timber installations in recent years.

Located at 82 Cremorne Road in Kedron, the project brings together the design intelligence of m3architecture, the structural expertise of Bligh Tanner, and the delivery capability of Hutchison Builders, all supported by Australian made timber supplied by Australian Sustainable Hardwoods (ASH) and NexTimber.

From the outset, the brief centred on precision. The structure required a series of complex, bespoke connection details that pushed the boundaries of conventional mass timber construction.

Savcon’s role focused exclusively on the installation of the timber structure, a scope defined by meticulous coordination, rigorous quality control and an unwavering commitment to Australian sourced materials.

The result is a building that reflects both architectural ambition and construction discipline. Every element, every junction, every interface, was executed to meet the high standards set by the project team and the College.

With the Queensland works now complete, Savcon’s presence on site has concluded for the moment. The team leaves behind a project that stands as a benchmark for detailed mass timber delivery and looks forward to returning to Queensland soon for the next chapter.

Thanks to all who have made and continue to make this project a true standout.

Who’s stepped through the Coffee Brigade HQ doors recently? ☕️

Between van shifts and sandwich shifts, mornings are early and full in Windsor.

Individuals, teams, organisations, friends and family join us every day, whether they’re making sandwiches, pouring a warm drink or sharing a chat with our friends.

We welcomed Jamie McErvale and the team from Ausenco again, who joined us for their monthly shift. In the last shift, all but one of the team had volunteered with us before; the newest member said she was thrilled Ausenco offered this kind of hands-on volunteering, and felt it was a real benefit of working there. They even brought their kids along, who happily joined in.

The Bligh Tanner team are Coffee Brigade Friday regulars, reliable, fun and efficient every time.

The team recently shared how much they love giving back to the community through their shifts.

Serve The City Brisbane keeps consistently booking out their Coffee Brigade shifts; their volunteer community shows up again and again. They also joined us for our recent Art of Community event, and we’re so grateful for their ongoing support and all the enthusiasm they bring.

If you’re interested in getting involved, comment VOLUNTEER, and we’ll send you more information, or head to https://coffeebrigade.org.au/volunteer-1.

You may have heard it referred to as the “$10 million playground”.

In reality, the $10 million investment related to the wider park redevelopment over many years, with the playground representing only a small portion of the overall project.

What we love most isn’t the budget discussion, it’s that years later the playground is still packed with families, still creating memories, and still serving the community exactly as intended.

That’s what good public investment looks like.

A new CLT home is rising in Cremorne, with the team at Brother Nature installing the Binderholz panels at impressive speed using our Rothoblaas tools and connectors.

Meticulously designed to Passivhaus standards by Dieppe Design, in collaboration with Blight Tanner on the structural engineering side, this project is a great example of precision design and efficient construction coming together.

Our membranes and tapes will also play a key role in delivering long-term weather protection and airtightness performance for the building envelope.

We’re excited to see this beautiful home come to life.

Great to be at the Water NZ Stormwater Conference this year and see the momentum building across the sector.

A big congratulations to Charlotte Arcus for winning the Best Poster Award, and to our @blightanner team for being shortlisted for the Best Paper Award, “All Dressed Up With Nowhere To Flow: The Curious Case of Fitzgibbon’s Alternative Water Supplies” — exploring the regulatory, governance and institutional barriers to decentralised alternative water supply, and the key lessons learnt that Australia and Aotearoa can draw from for advancing water security.

We also heard excellent presentations from Riley de Jong and Sean Hinton at Bligh Tanner and from Tonkin + Taylor’s Mark Hooker, Tessa Allan, and Lisa Dowson, alongside a strong programme of workshops and panels exploring how stormwater reform is taking shape in practice. Alex Cartwright’s paper on bridging the gap between systems and responsibilities to better manage risk was another highlight.

One of the strongest themes throughout the conference was the shift from reactive flood recovery to more proactive risk management. With flooding events becoming more frequent and severe, the need for sustained investment in stormwater infrastructure is increasingly hard to ignore, particularly compared with the regulatory focus on drinking water and wastewater.

It was encouraging to see the progress made across the industry in the last year, including discussions around potential revisions to rainfall considerations and how organisations are working toward meeting statutory requirements under reform.

Out on site at Blue Heart Recreation Park with Sunshine Coast Council gaining a deeper understanding of this evolving floodplain landscape.

The visit reinforced the importance of designing with change over time. Our designs for the park, land and water trails, signage, and wayfinding will focus on balancing flood function, ecological restoration, cultural values, and community access within a highly dynamic environment.

Looking forward to the next phase of translating on-site learnings into thoughtful, future-ready design.
