Head Ice Hockey Coach - Tennessee State University

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

“If you can play Hockey, you can do anything”.
- Coach Neal Henderson

Once known as being riddled with racism and exclusiveness, Ice Hockey over the years has made some positive steps towards being a more diverse and inclusive sport.

Since the late 70’s, Neil Henderson, the program Founder and Head Coach of Washington DC’s Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club, also known as the Cannons (America’s oldest minority oriented Hockey club) has shown that if you give a kid - no matter what race, ethnicity or gender - a stick, a puck, some equipment, ice time and a chance, they can become hockey players.

Even more importantly, they can become better people…..

Read the rest of my IMDB.com review from 2021 (which I heavily promoted on my social media platforms) of the 2021 film documentary, THE CANNONS: BROTHERS ON ICE, directed and written by Steven Hoffner and co-directed/ co-written by A. J. Messier; executive produced by Robert Ford (The Cost of Winning) and actor Robert Walker-Branchaud (Stranger Things, 13 Reasons Why, The Walking Dead), with former NHL goaltender and current ESPN analyst Kevin Weekes, serving as associate producer, as well as 2015’s black hockey documentary, “SOUL ON ICE: Past, Present & Future” creator, writer & director, Kwame Damon Mason. Mason is also the creator & lead voice of the SOUL ON ICE podcast, as well (narrator in this video too!).

More on Neal Henderson & the Fort DuPont Cannons coming soon.

TSU @tennstateu remains poised to become the first historically Black college or university (HBCU) to sponsor NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey…..

Tennessee State University announced last summer, that the launch of its historic men’s hockey program @tsutigers_hockey will shift to this upcoming 2026-27 season.

The decision, made in collaboration with the National Hockey League (NHL), the Nashville Predators, and College Hockey Inc., underscores a shared commitment to building a sustainable and competitive program from day one.

The announcement coincides with a $250,000 grant from the NHL/ National Hockey League Players Association (NHLPA) Industry Growth Fund and continued support from the Nashville Predators.

For more updates about the program & schedule, please refer to IG page @tsutigers_hockey.

I will also be providing more info. & presenting content about the program throughout the upcoming season here @riseup_hockey (I am not an employee of the University, just an invested hockey fan/ content creator/blogger).
