POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Imagined Futures has been years in the making. Candace and Charles have built something powerful that honors the stories, dreams, and brilliance of Black faculty across the country. I’ve had the honor of capturing the journey behind the scenes, and I’m in awe every step of the way.

This project is a love letter to what’s possible when we center Black voices and futures in and beyond academia.

We’re almost there. Help us bring it home—every donation gets us closer. Link in bio.

DID YOU KNOW?

For decades, faculties and administrators have raised questions regarding to what we might attribute the low representation of Black faculty in U.S. colleges and universities.

In 1993, for instance, leading scholars, educational administrators, and social critics came together to offer their analyses on the vast underrepresentation of Black professors in the academy. In the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education article “Why the Shortage of Black Professors?,” Martin Anderson and colleagues theorized about the limited impact of equal employment opportunity legislation and affirmative action policies on diversifying college faculties in the first 30 years of their enactment. Editors of the journal posed the following questions to which the authors of the article responded:

* To what extent are black professors still subject to discrimination in hiring and promotion decisions?
* Are hiring and tenure decisions still controlled by people who feel that blacks do not have the capacity to teach or do serious research in traditional academic subjects?
* Are affirmative-action programs flagging?
* Why do so few blacks choose to pursue careers in higher education?
* How is the situation to be remedied?

In the 30 years since its publishing, Black faculty have still increased only slightly. What else must be done to move the needle? Surely it is not us continuing to make the case and further demonstrating our excellence. Is it not a shift in the ideologies and beliefs by our colleagues that we are less capable or less deserving?

What do you think? Sound-off in the comments!

During a trip to the University of Maryland, College Park, we had the chance to share amazing moments with leading scholars in the field, including the inimitable Dr. Sharon Fries-Britt. Take a moment and listen the Distinguished University Professor in Higher Education as she responds to @hallofacademia, reflecting on what it meant for @umdcollegeofed to host the Imagined Futures pop-up studio after her decades of service.
