Alex and I’s first piece from our country rap project was just published in the Oxford Handbook of Pop Music, a nearly 800-page tome single-handedly edited by @eweisbard. Our chapter has lots of material about outlaws, mud, and the politics of race, place, and music genre. This was really fun to think and write. It makes a nice home alongside chapters by @dandipiero, @pch9857, @phdmusicology, @stevewaksman, @keggergoldy, @annkpowers, and many more. Like any Oxford handbook, it comes with a hefty price tag, so hit me up if you want the pdf!

Since my first show in Nov 2018, @dublab has given me a radically open space to experiment with the possible, to create musical conversations, and to learn—often live & on air!

I love being able to invite artists, scholars, and DJs visiting LA to come into the beautiful studio. I love having an excuse to interview and build shows with people I admire in their offices, homes, skype/zoom, & my kitchen. Every episode is archived on dublab’s awe-inspiring, treasure-trove website dating from the beginning of internet radio in 1999.

It’s an honor to receive the first Charles Hiroshi Garrett Fellowship from @socammus with @blue_tha_fiff! Chuck was a model scholar and a generous senior colleague. It feels really special to hold this fellowship named after him and to carry out such meaningful work with it.

Come hang out with the @tulanemusic musicology faculty next week for a series of public lectures including Alexandra Hui talking about the history and science of background music, @blue_tha_fiff and I talking about country rap, and @habittrail talking about Japanese noise music—a.k.a Japanoise. All talks are happening in the Dixon Recital Hall (room 152 of the Dixon Annex—lemme know if you need directions)!

Congratulations to the three recipients of our recent Call for Applications: Claudia Arozqueta, Alex Blue V, and Sarah Stevenson. Claudia and Sarah have both recently joined us on Fogo Island, while Alex just completed the residency.

Claudia Arozqueta is an interdisciplinary historian, curator, and writer. She is the author of Heartbeat Art (MIT Press, 2025). Her writing has also appeared in catalogues, books, academic journals, and magazines, including Leonardo, Artforum, e-flux Criticism, etc. As an independent curator she has organized over twenty exhibitions in international spaces.

Alex Blue V is Assistant Professor of Black Studies in Media and Technology at McGill University. His research examines the intersections of race, sound, space, and place. Additionally, he is interested in narratives of death, dying, and afterlives in relation to sound and musical culture.

Sarah Stevenson is an artist working primarily in the medium of sculpture, although recent work could also be considered as Textile art. She was born in England and raised in Canada. Stevenson’s work has been shown in group exhibitions at galleries within Canada and abroad, including The Art Gallery of Ontario, The Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, The Galleria d’Arte Moderna, Bologna. Recent solo exhibitions include the Esker Foundation in Calgary and the fonderie Darling in Montréal.

Alex Blue V is a musical jack of all trades, enjoying his life as a performer, writer, arranger, producer, educator, adjudicator, researcher, and more. He is Assistant Professor of Black Studies in Media and Technology in the Department of Art History and Communication Studies at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. His research examines the intersections of race, sound, space, and place, often employing heavily ethnographic methods to demonstrate the influence of race on sound, and the influence of sound on race. Blue is currently working on two book projects. The first, titled A Matter of Death and Life, is a “necrographic” study of the narratives of death and dying in contemporary Detroit hip-hop, and how artists employ various forms of death as praxis in music making. The second, which he is co-authoring with Dr. Kyle DeCoste (Tulane University), is an ethnographic study of country rap, also known as “hick hop,” that examines issues of race, gender, class, nationalism, and identity, primarily (but not entirely) in the southern United States.

We’ll be on a couple things talking about our work on country rap tomorrow—a roundtable at 11 a.m. about the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Pop Music to which we’ll be contributing and a discussion titled “Filth and (Un)Fashion in Country Rap” with Francesca Royster as discussant.
